Hearing the Music for a Lifetime

written by Michelle L. Tejada, AuD, PASC (Area 9 Past Chair)

When enjoying music, we rely on our sense of hearing. It is critical that we take care of our ears so that we can enjoy the music for a lifetime.

Our inner ears contain tiny hair cells which change sound into electrical signals that are sent to the brain. These hair cells are easily damaged when exposed to loud sound. In some cases, the hearing loss is temporary and returns to normal within 16 hours. However, repeated exposure to loud sound, including music, can lead to permanent hearing loss and/or tinnitus, a ringing or buzzing sound in the ears. In most cases, the hearing loss is gradual and may not be noticed until the damage is irreversible.

Whether or not a sound is damaging to our ears is dependent on many factors. The most important factors are loudness and duration. The louder the sound, the more harmful it is. Similarly, the longer that one is exposed to a loud sound, the more damaging it is.

Missions in Music – Jamaica Edition

written by Venita MacGorman, Area 9 Education Chair

I was part of a fourteen person volunteer team that visited Westmoreland, Jamaica, with one goal – teach music reading to adults and children in the Savanna-la-Mar Circuit. The circuit is made up of six churches, all of which are pastored by the Rev. Abasilum Smith. Members of all six churches met at the Wesley Chapel in Savanna-la-Mar.

The Methodist Church in the Caribbean has a wonderful new hymnal that makes use of traditional Caribbean melodies and that contains hymns with inclusive language. There are very few trained musicians in the circuit, and the Wesley Chapel is the only one that owns a musical instrument. There has been very little opportunity for the church members to learn the new hymns in their hymnal up to this point.

Silent Auction Prize Creates Tulsa Mega Concert

written by Mike McCrary, Director of Tulsa Festival Ringers

At the 2014 Symposium in Atlanta, one of the silent auction items was a concert with David Weck, Jane Holstein, and Joel Raney. Sheryl Cory, a charter member of Tulsa Festival Ringers, was the successful bidder on this package. Sheryl then surprised TFR by telling us that she had purchased it for our group.

Fast forward to the weekend of May 1-3. The dynamic trio of Dave, Jane, and Joel arrived in Tulsa for what turned out to be a wonderful weekend. We had been communicating since last summer and had planned a concert that consisted of bells alone, bells with organ, bells with piano and organ, and piano and organ duets. TFR had been working all spring to prepare the music – most of which was arranged by Joel Raney.
