Chime Loan Program Now Open

The Area 9 Chime Loan Program was established in 2003 to promote the use of handchimes and handbells in Oklahoma and Texas educational settings. In honor of the Guild’s 50th anniversary, one three-octave set of Malmark handchimes was purchased. Since that time, we have added a second set of three-octave Malmark chimes for use in this program.

Any organization within Area 9 is eligible to apply for the Chime Loan Program regardless of membership status. Handchimes will be loaned only once to a particular organization except in extenuating circumstances. The loan program is for one school year. Applications for use in summer programs may also be considered.

Applications will be submitted to the Area 9 Education Coordinator – Venita MacGorman – by July 15, 2015.

Visit area9.handbellmusicians.org for complete details and a downloadable application!

Ahoy, Area 9! Information is coming soon!

About Those Chimes....
By Venita MacGorman

In this newsletter you will read about Area 9’s handchime loan program; this is a great program for all types of educational institutions –elementary school to universities! If you are an educator – or if you know one – consider the benefits of handchimes.

Handheld chime instruments were developed originally as educational tools. All of the companies presently manufacturing handchimes tell us that their instrument was developed at the request of music educators who recognized the potential of the handbell choir but needed an instrument that was less expensive, required less equipment, and was easier for young hands to manipulate than a handbell. The handchime instrument fits all of these requirements! In addition to the regular music classroom, handchimes were welcomed by special education teachers who were able to use them with students with a wide variety of disabilities. Directors and music therapists who work with senior adults discovered that the chime instruments, which could be played from a seated position and whose lighter weight put less strain on wrists and arms than handbells, offered an opportunity for seniors to ring in a musical ensemble.

Disney Fantasy Bells on Parade
by Bryce Nance

The winners of the 2014 Worlds Greatest Handbell Competition, the Kinjo Gakuin University Handbell Choir, are at it again with a stunning concert recently uploaded on YouTube. Their Disney-heavy concert displays the amazing amount of technique and skill that we have come to know this group for. If you do not have an hour to spend watching the whole concert, the most spectacular piece in the repertoire is "Disney Fantasy Bells on Parade" arr. Toshikazy Yoshida.

If you enjoyed the performance, head over to YouTube to like and comment on the video!
