Help Us Get Handbells Out of the Closet!

This coming September, Handbell Musicians of America will launch a new campaign to get unused sets out of the closet and get dormant programs Back to Bells. Throughout the Guild we will offer free, 4-hour workshops designed to help churches reintroduce or start a handbell program in their congregation.

The workshop will provide training in basic handbell techniques, use of bells in worship, ringing with less than a full choir, handbell maintenance, rehearsal techniques, and more.

Do you know a church in your community that would benefit from this program? Send us the church name and address via email to: membership@handbellmusicians.org and we’ll make sure they know about workshops offered near them.

Ahoy, Area 9! Boarding has begun!

Hello Area 9 Members!

Marci Corey here. I serve as the treasurer on the Area 9 board. As treasurer, I handle a lot of event registrations, and I wanted to share some tips for making registration as easy and simple as possible.

Check the Area 9 website and read Ringing News regularly for upcoming events. As events become published, mark your calendar with the date of the event and also the registration deadline. If you can, set an alert on your calendar for a couple of weeks in advance of the deadline to make sure you’ve gathered all the information you need before your registration is due. Set one more alert the day before the deadline to make sure everything is complete.

When registering for a Handbell Musicians of America event, you’ll need your membership number so be sure to have that on hand when you get ready to complete your registration form. If you’re not sure if your church is a member or if you’ve lost your membership info, you can contact the national office for assistance.

We have several exciting events in the works for the fall and throughout 2016 (like our amazing Summit 2016: The Ocean Journey). If you need assistance with your registrations, you can email me at treasurer.area9@handbellmusicians.org. I’ll help however I can!

Chime Loan Program – Application Deadline July 15, 2015

Time is drawing near for our Chime Loan Program application period. Please help spread the word that any organization within Area 9 is eligible to apply for the Chime Loan Program regardless of membership status. Handchimes will be loaned only once to a particular organization except in extenuating circumstances. The loan program is for one school year. Applications for use in summer programs may also be considered.

Visit area9.handbellmusicians.org for complete details and a downloadable application!

Anthony Scholarship Awarded

Area 9 is happy to announce that Melissa Birney of Oklahoma City, OK, was selected as the recipient of the Kristopher Jon Anthony Memorial Scholarship. Melissa will receive $500 toward her Pinnacle 2015 registration and travel.

Melissa works in Edmond, OK, as a vet assistant. She rings in the Oklahoma City Handbell Ensemble and has been ringing since she was a little girl in California. Stay tuned for Melissa’s Pinnacle 2015 experience.

Enjoy the Tension

This article was originally written and published by Michael J. Glasgow, Area 3 Newsletter Editor, in the Bell-O-Gram

We don’t generally think of “tension” as a word with a positive connotation. We describe difficult situations as “tense.” We talk about physical stress by describing “tense muscles,” or saying someone’s body “tensed up.” There was tension in the air may be a phrase used to convey how awful and uncomfortable a meeting or rehearsal was.

However, as a conductor, I’ve come more and more to appreciate what I refer to as “healthy tension.” I believe that effective music — music which really connects to people’s hearts and souls — is a constant exchange of the building and releasing of tension. Less-negative words may be “expectation” or “anticipation,” but the effect is the same. When we play with musical expression, we bring our listeners to a place where they are, on some level, “uncomfortable” because they yearn to get to the satisfying resolution.
