In Memoriam: Hrant Dink, 1954-2007

01/26/2007

The American Turkish Society vehemently condemns last week's brutal attack on Hrant Dink, the founder and editor of the Turkish-Armenian newspaper, Agos. We extend our sincerest condolences to his family and friends, as well as Armenian and Turkish people around the world.

Hrant Dink's life and work stood for peace, freedom of expression, and constructive debate on a long-standing and highly-charged conflict between Turkey and Armenia. His legacy, despite the terrible circumstances of his death, is already an equally positive force.  This has been an extraordinary week for Armenian-Turkish relations, diplomatically as well as on a personal level for millions in Turkey, Armenia, and around the world. We hope that the genuine expressions of sorrow, outrage, and unity of the past week in Turkey will be the catalyst for a more open dialogue and a greater understanding between the two peoples.

The American Turkish Society is in the process of developing a program to discuss this important issue in the coming months as a part of its ongoing lecture and discussion series on issues of current importance to Turkey and the U.S -Turkish relations.
