DeSoto's photography, sculpture, visual and sound installations have been exhibited widely across the United States as well as in England, Italy, Mexico, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden. His recently published book EMPIRE is an exploration of deSoto’s birthplace and ancestral homeland, through masterful photography and stunning personal essays.

DeSoto has long been renowned for his installation and photographic works. He has taught photography at San Francisco State since 1988. In this book and the exhibition of the same name, deSoto premiers a technique of seamless, panoramic image capture on a grand scale made possible by a NASA derived program that stitches together hundreds of photos into infinitely focused works. His layered essays bring several regions — Redlands, San Bernardino, Hwy 18, Riverside, Ontario, Palm Springs — to life as places of rich Cahuilla and Spanish history, places of industrialization and sharp social stratas, and landscapes of deeply personal transformation.
