Summary

Population growth is a concern across the world, but to fully understand its potential impact, one needs to first understand the principles that control populations and how growth can be measured. In this lab, students will use E. coli that smells like bananas to learn how to measure and predict growth. Students will learn about growth curves and how to prepare standards to measure cell density. They will also learn how to graph the data they collect for analysis, allowing them to make predictions about growth patterns and rates. Lab will end with an exercise in design, using the lab’s tools and concepts to address challenges impacting our world.

Intended Age Group: 10-14 years old. This workshop is scheduled for November 17, 2019, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
