I have been volunteering with CASA of Cook County since August 2011. Being a volunteer has moved me in a way that no other experience in my life has. I have had the privilege of working with resilient children and caring, thoughtful foster parents. As a voice for the most vulnerable youth in our society, I have visited children in their foster placements, listened to them, played with them, hugged them, and laughed with them. It has been such a privilege advocating for children in foster care through my involvement with CASA. I have learned so much about the foster care system, and how much work needs to be done on behalf of the kids in care. The resiliency of the children in care is incredible. The kids I have advocated for have touched my heart, and I am honored to have been part of their lives, even if only temporarily.
I joined Team CASA 2017 because I am passionate about the work I do, and passionate about helping other kids in care gain access to a trained, passionate CASA to help them reach permanency in their lives. For over 30 years, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Cook County has been training everyday people to stand up for children that have experienced abuse and neglect in an overwhelmed and extremely under-resourced foster care system. Today there are anywhere between 5,800 to 6,000 children in Cook County’s foster care system—and CASA of Cook County can only provide one-on-one support for less than 6 percent of them. Because of our limited resources, our volunteer advocates are court-appointed for cases deemed most in need of individual, dedicated support. Our goal in 2017 is to once again run the Bank of America Chicago Marathon and raise $50,000. 100% of the money raised will go towards CASA of Cook County's child advocacy program.
