Description

CLiF storyteller Duncan McDougall visits the Parent University program run by the Burlington School District for a parent literacy discussion, storytelling event with children and a free book giveaway.  Parent University is an innovative educational model that promotes learning for parents of BSD students through a holistic multi-generational approach, taking families’ challenges, needs, and educational goals into account for maximum impact on student success. Through free classes offered five days per week, the program teaches valuable skills and knowledge that benefit both families and children (i.e. parenting skills, budgeting, and English language literacy) and promotes an inclusive school culture, helping participants to feel welcome and valued in their school community, which is crucial in empowering them to become a partner in their children’s education.  CLiF will visit the program twice during its current session.  During the first session on February 6th, Duncan will talk with the parents about strategies for inspiring a love of reading at home, answer questions, and deliver an onsite library worth $1,500 to the program.  During CLiF's second visit on February 13th, Duncan will host an interactive storytelling event for parents and children and CLiF will give away two brand new books to each child in attendance.
