Lean Methodology for Biomed - Optimizing Clinical Engineering using LEAN: The Ottawa Heart Institute Experience

Presenter:

Timothy J. Zakutney, Director, Biomedical Engineering, University of Ottawa Heart Institute Adjunct Research Professor, Dept of Systems & Computer Engineering, Carleton University

Overview:

Most biomedical engineering departments have significant challenges related efficient work flow, space design, and prioritization of functions. This webinar provides real-world solutions for for these issues. Tim Zakutney will take what he has implemented at Ottawa Heart and present step by step, methods that will no-doubt inspire those who are eager to implement change in their workplace. An overview of fundamental elements applied to actual system problems will be presented.

LEAN, Six Sigma, and other optimization tools are gaining tremendous inertia and application in Canadian Healthcare Environment. Successes have been realized in improvement of workflow and patient care processes in emergency departments, medical imaging programs, and operating room programs. Biomedical Engineering (BME) at The University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) recognized that improvements were required in their operation and investigated the application of a LEAN tool, 5S, to their operation.

This Webinar will walk through the entire process of a LEAN initiative for Clinical Engineering from deciding if this is the right process to undergo to performing the project to

sustaining work performed. A great deal of planning, communication, discipline, and perseverance is required to undergo such an emotional and time consuming exercise. Strategies to

overcome the pitfalls encountered during this process will also be discussed. For the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, the LEAN initiative was long outstanding and immediate and

dramatic improvements were realized. Perhaps this could work for your Department.
