Awardees for School Year 2016-17

The first of the new LOUIS ANDANNETTE KAUFMAN MUSIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS has gone to violinist Boaz Hardy, student of Hong Chou, picutred performing the Debussy Violin Sonata with his friend Noah Schooler on piano at the Graduation and Honors Recital June 9, 2017.  See "Gradulates Honored" for his impresive biography.  This is a new annual award of $2,000 to be given to a violin or piano student, initiated and perpetuated by a gift from the Kaufman estate. Louis & Annette Kaufman supported CMC for many years (see below for history), so we are very excited to announce this new substantial financial award for commitment to music.

History of the Kaufmans at CMC

Louis and Annette Kaufman, both doctors of music and renowned performers (violin and piano, respectively), were friend of the Community Music Center for many years. CMC’s first annual award was the Kaufman Bow award, begun in 1970. Initially, each winner received a violin bow. Eventually this became a cash gift, funded by Annette Kaufman in memory of her husband Louis. Recently, before Annette passed away, she bequeathed a large cash gift to the Center, a portion of which was to be used each year for an award to a piano or violin student. It is said that among Louis Kaufman’s many achievements was re-introducing and popularizing the Vivaldi violin concerti known as “The Four Seasons”. The amazing musical life and times of Louis & Annette Kaufman is documented in the autobiography “A Fiddler’s Tale”, a copy of which is in the CMC reference library.
