A Look Back at 2023

Milestones, Memories & Gratitude
At the end of 2023 we take a moment to look back at the last 12 months, as captured in our eNotes and news posts over the year.
Milestones
- The year 2023 saw the return of free and low-cost concerts in CMC's David Beasley Campbell Auditorium. Many of our CMC concerts are now livestreamed to accommodate those who cannot attend in person.
- Space Use Grants were offered to underserved artists and communities for the 2023-24 school year, thanks to the Parks Local Option Levy.
- We were honored to have the Music Director of the Oregon Symphony, David Danzmayr, visit CMC in the spring.
- Six amazing high school graduates were honored in June.
- Over 30 students were rewarded with merit scholarships or other accolades at the end of the 2022-23 school year.
- CMC was a partner at the 2nd Annual East Portland Summer Arts Festival in July, hosting a pre-concert music jam tent.
- CMC and the Center Powered by YOUth (youthpdx.org) collaborated to create 'music, beats & sounds' summer camps, and the partnership continues in the 2023-24 school year.
- Six amazing performing-arts instructors were hired to join the roster teachers at CMC and YOUth.
- Our winter benefit concert was a sold-out fundraising success for CMC and Portland Youth Philharmonic.
- We replaced our aging fleet of digital pianos and added a new piano lab and classes at the Center Powered by YOUth.
- And, oh yes, we also provided over 50 weekly classes and thousands of lessons to over 350 students through the year!
We remember those who have passed during the year, including:
Barbara Camp was an energetic and active CMC board member for 23 years, occasionally serving as president or vice-president, until 2007. She was also an avid cellist and concertgoer.
Anthony Dyer taught violin and viola at CMC for 21 years from 2002, and was often performing in CMC's annual faculty fundraiser concerts. He was a dedicated instructor, even teaching from his hospital room this year.
Dorothy Fahlman contributed to the Portland music community and beyond for six decades.
Nick Wutzke was a CMC donor and supporter of his niece's and nephew's education at the Center.
