About Jack Malcom:

Jack Malcom was a successful florist in Gresham and a member of the Metropolitan Arts Commission.  After his death in 2009, his estate set aside $1.2 million for generous charitable gifts to local institutions. More info here:

An additional small portion of the estate was left to the discretion of the executor, Bob Dye.

"Jack loved music and seeing good talent perform so when I saw an article about the Portland Parks and Recreation Community Music Center, I decided to check it out," said Dye. "After touring the Center I was impressed with the caliber instructors and the kids, many of whom couldn't afford instruction anywhere else."

"Bob was very eager to help with what we needed most," says Gregory Dubay, the Center's director.  "CMC's piano program serves hundreds of people a week, and as a result our keyboards were getting signs of wear: keys not working properly, parts breaking.  After showing this to Bob, he said, 'I'm giving you $20,000.  Let me know when they'll be delivered.  And Classic Pianos has been a great partner, really helping us stretch this donation as far as possible."

The CMC, Inc. board of directors intends to spend the rest of the donation on other instruments (strings, winds & brass) to be loaned out to low-income students for music lessons.

The Community Music Center (CMC), located at 3350 SE Francis Street, is a Portland Parks & Recreation facility in partnership with CMC, Inc., an all-volunteer nonprofit organization.  CMC, Inc. raises money to help subsidize tuition fees at the school.  CMC and CMC, Inc. serve families across the greater-Portland area and support those with limited economic means by increasing access to music performances and educational opportunities.
