In the afternoon, the group goes to two scheduled Nature Inspired Curriculum Events (NICE). A NICE is an hour of focused, intentional activity. Earthplace has four NICEs: Nature, Animals, Theater and Art. Each NICE is scheduled twice a week on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday. Wednesday afternoons are reserved for field trips.

Nature – In the Nature NICE we explore science and the environment with hands-on experimentation and scientific investigation. Nature NICE activities could include insect observation and discovery along the trails or a pond study.

Animal – In the Animal NICE we meet teaching animals from the Earthplace live animal collection. Campers will have the opportunity to touch and interact with the animals while we learn about their species, habits and care.

Theater – In the Theater NICE campers do improvisational performances, plan and perform group skits, sing songs, integrate props and costumes and more activities all inspired by the session theme. The Theater NICE is a great opportunity for free expression.

Art – In the Art NICE projects either depict nature or be composed of natural elements all inspired by the session’s theme.

Each Wednesday afternoon campers in these groups go off-campus for a field trip based on the session’s theme.

Trekkers (grades 5-8) Summer Camp

Summary: In this group a limited number of campers venture off-campus each day for special trips focused on nature and discovery inspired by the session theme. Every other week of the Trekker program includes a Thursday night sleep over at Earthplace. Pick-up from the overnight will be at 9:00am, and there will be no camp for Trekkers on Friday.

After-school Childcare for Elementary School Children

Summary: With 62 acres of open space, 30 live animals, and an interactive natural history museum at Earthplace this new program offers an unparalleled opportunity for students in grades K-5 to learn, play, and explore. The program provides high quality childcare for working families, Monday through Friday, 3:00pm to 6:00pm.

Each afternoon begins with supervised homework time followed by a variety of unique enrichment activities including science classes, animal programs, nature walks, visits to the Connecticut Birds of Prey exhibit and free-play time on the newly renovated playground. All children who attend on Wednesdays are automatically included in the After-school Adventure Program.

The Earthplace After-school Childcare Program provides a bridge between school and home that will connect students with nature in a meaningful way. Evidence shows that this helps children develop responsibility, self-confidence and respect for nature and the environment.

The program is open to all students, grades K-5 in Westport and surrounding towns. Transportation from Saugatuck School and King’s Highway School will be provided by the Westport Transit District’s Afterschool Shuttle Bus. Students who opt to ride the bus from these schools will be accompanied by Earthplace staff.

Scheduling Options: Students can enjoy the program on a Five, Three, Two or One day set schedule.
Annual tuition is accepted in monthly installments. Monthly fees are as follows:

Animal Tech Programs

Summary: Animal Tech students will learn about the Earthplace resident animals and how to care for them. Through investigation, hands-on practice, and instruction, students will learn how to feed, clean, groom and handle our animals. During our last meeting, students will present what they've learned to family, friends and fellow Animal Tech students.

For students ages 10-14, preregistration is required.

All Stars - April 1, 8, 22, 29
Students who have participated in at least one Animal Tech class can come and spend more time with their favorite animals.

Pond Study - May 6, 13, 20, 27

Teen Volunteer Club Spring 2014
