Equip for Equality hosts Disability Rights Consortium meeting on April 23rd focused on community integration litigation updates

The next meeting of the Disability Rights Consortium will take place on Wednesday, April 23rd from 9:30-11:00 at Equip for Equality (20 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 300, Chicago, IL).

 

Topic: Olmstead Legal Debate

We will be discussing community integration litigation 15 years after the Supreme Court’s decision in Olmstead v. L.C., in which the Court held that unnecessary segregation of people with disabilities is discrimination under the ADA.

 

Presenters

Barry Taylor from Equip for Equality be discussing how the Olmstead decision has been applied to various contexts including people at risk of institutionalization, people living in private facilities, and in employment. Then there will be an update on the implementation of the three Illinois Olmstead Consent Decrees. Barry Taylor will discuss the Ligas case (people with developmental disabilities), Ben Wolf from the ACLU of Illinois will discuss the Williams case (people with mental illness), and Karen Ward from Equip for Equality will discuss the Colbert case (people with physical disabilities and people with mental illness living in nursing homes).
