Equip for Equality hosts Disability Rights Consortium meeting on March 26th focused on veterans with disabilities

 

US Army Veteran in uniform walking away The next meeting of the Disability Rights Consortium will take place on Wednesday March 26th from 9:30-11:00 at Equip for Equality (20 N. Michigan, Suite 300).

Topic: Veterans with Disabilities

Presenters

Presenting at the meeting will be Yelena Duerte, a staff attorney at John Marshall Law School's Veterans Legal Support Center & Clinic and Beth Karpiak, a staff attorney and Equal Justice Fellow with Equip for Equality's Traumatic Brain Injury Project. Yelena will provide an overview of benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs, including initial eligibility requirements, establishing service connection, disability percentages, and benefits for non-veterans. She will also cover what to expect when representing a veteran at the different levels of appellate review. Beth will provide a brief background on common issues of abuse and neglect among individuals with TBI, legal strategies her project is implementing to address abuse and neglect, and her efforts to increase access to services to veterans.
