President's Message

Declaring Independence

As the whole nation celebrates the 4th of July, we can reflect on the events that took place in 1776 to help strengthen our resolve. To the average person, Independence Day is mainly about gathering with family and friends: watching parades, enjoying a meal and each other’s company. The night ends with viewing of a spectacular fireworks display. With all the excitement of the celebration, much of the day can be spent without reflection of the meaning of Independence Day. We get too busy in the goings on around us or our own personal life to recognize the courage and the sacrifice of those that came before us.

I understand this happens with many holidays, we focus on the celebrating part more than the reason for the celebration.  In regards to the history of our independence day, historians have told us the story in many different ways and from many different angles; however, one truth is consistent.  A group of individuals recognized that something was not right in their environment, they stood their ground with certainty, and the world was changed forever. They knew going into it that it would be uncomfortable.  They knew their personal lives would be in jeopardy, but it was worth it all to make right that which was not.  We chiropractors are of that same mentality. Although our lives are not directly in jeopardy, thanks to the sacrifice of our forefathers, we do recognize and work to change that which is not right in our environment. 

 The shortcomings of the current Healthcare system are readily apparent when we realize that the system itself has become the third leading cause of death in our population. But, our battle is not against the current Healthcare system; our battle is to change the mentality of the population so that they can be empowered to make the right choices for their own health. Every day we need to have the tenacity of those that came before us to teach our patients that health comes from within themselves, that removal of interference to that truth is the best pursuit toward achieving a healthy life. Just as it was for our forefathers, neither is the task easy for us.  Every day the average person is bombarded with false information about what health is, but it is our certainty of purpose and practice that can help them overcome the bondage of sickness and dis-ease.

As we celebrate this holiday, let us reflect on the sacrifices of those who came before us and honor them through commitment to sacrifice in our own lives. The pursuit of happiness is only a cliché if life is not lived at one’s full potential.

From all of us at the GCC, Happy Independence Day, and may we all continue on the path to making our ancestors’ dreams become reality.

The results are in and it was a very close race. Dr. Karen Mathiak's campaign to represent District 73 in the Georgia House of Representatives continues with a runoff on July 26.  You need her to represent chiropractic at the state capitol, and she needs you to help her continue the campaign.
