President's Message...

GCC is Focused and ON TRACK

On March 3rd and 4th, the board of the GCC, along with our great Executive Director, spent over 12 hours in a boardroom working on our Strategic Plan during our Board Retreat.  We hired a wonderful facilitator who kept us on track and focused. We came out...READY! Ready to serve Chiropractic, Chiropractors and the public.

Really that’s what it broke down to; we have 3 main focus areas for our organization.

  1. Chiropractic- It is GCC's intention to do our part to keep Chiropractic, Chiropractic. This requires our continued presence at the capitol and maintaining the strong relationships with legislators that we’ve been fostering for years.  If you don’t already donate to the CIP fund...please do so. Dr. Sid always said it takes money and votes to get things done.

  2. Chiropractors- It is our intention to help new, young and older Chiros THRIVE in practice AND life!  No matter how a person decides to practice, we want to give them the tools to succeed. The GCC has always had the MOST SUCCESSFUL Chiros within their membership and board. That is still true and we will work with you to continue the tradition of success.

  3. The Public- we will educate the public on the benefits of Chiropractic and help them to Find our members' offices.

Like I said...a POWERFUL WEEKEND to say the least! We will be sending out a copy of the Strategic Plan in a couple of weeks.

Our next SNL/Nuts & Bolts practice success event will be on Saturday, May 5th.  Because of the date, we have decided on Cinco de CHIRO!!! We will have amazing speakers Lyle Koca, Devin Vrana, and Cheryl Langley, plus a great night of Mexican food, Margaritas, and Mexican Beer!  Join us at the Treehouse on Life U’s campus for the festivities.

Next month, on May 18-19th we will be at The Rubicon Conference hosted by Life U at The Waverly Hotel.  Dr. Awais Butt will be a featured speaker on the main stage and the GCC will also have a booth at the event.  Look for more details on this to follow as well.

Here’s to hoping your life and practice are also Focused and On Track and if not, give me a call...I’d love to help.

Feature Article...

Congratulations to Life University on New Commons

LIFE U'S THE NEW COMMONS STUDENT HOUSING AND DINING FACILITY ON SCHEDULE FOR FALL 2018 OPENING

  - The New Commons is Now Taking Applications for Their Fall 2018 Wait List

Construction that began in 2017 on the Life University (LIFE) campus for a brand new, 99,000 square-foot campus housing and dining facility is making significant progress in anticipation for its completion by Fall Quarter 2018. This facility will be called The New Commons, and it is currently accepting applications from prospective residents for its Fall 2018 wait list.

As part of the University's 2020 Vision established in 2006 by its Board of Trustees, The New Commons will increase living, dining and recreational/leisure facilities to accommodate an anticipated growth in both undergraduate and graduate enrollment in the next few years. Also a part of the 2020 Vision strategic plan, the University's goal is an enrollment of 3,000 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate students by 2020, as well as an enrollment of 2,000 in the College of Chiropractic, with a waiting list.

"The New Commons will help us support the increased undergraduate population resulting from our expanding academic programs and provide an exciting living and learning environment," notes LIFE Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Marc Schneider. "Our student-athletes will also benefit from the project, as they will be able to live in community with other like-minded individuals."

As part of construction for the new facility, approximately half of the old Commons buildings on the southeast side of Barclay Circle (the South Cobb Dr. entrance of the campus) were demolished. LIFE currently has one other on-campus student housing facility (LIFE Village Retreat), as well as the main campus eatery (Socrates Café). The new facility is expected to accommodate approximately 362 students. In comparison, the LIFE Village Retreat currently accommodates 300 students. (Click here to read more)

ICA President's Update...

 The Changing Tide

-Dr. George Curry, ICA President

In 1895 DD Palmer established chiropractic, a new profession founded on a new thought, a new idea, a new paradigm that health comes from above down inside out. The concept that the supremacy of the nervous system in regulating every tissue, organ and cell in the body should take precedence in maintaining health, and that the vertebral subluxation is the major impediment in the interruption of the critical brain cell to tissue cell connection for the restoration and maintenance of optimum health and expression of life, were new, original and unique ideas. DD Palmer opined that one day these ideas would not be so new and that chiropractic would be recognized for its ability to prevent disease.

Have we finally reached that stage in today’s society where disease prevention takes precedent over disease treatment?

Unfortunately, we are not there yet. And it’s not likely to occur as long as big Pharma is ready, willing and ABLE to push their products for high profits. More diseases equal more products and more money for the monster pharmaceutical companies.

Dr. Fred Barge was quoted as saying, “Chiropractors will become the doctors who have the ultimate concern for health maintenance and disease prevention, the doctors who understand that structure affects function and the health of man, doctors with the ultimate skill in correcting subluxations.”

A recent study published in Spine (2017) gives an insight into what stage we are at regarding disease prevention vs. disease treatment. Researchers looked at the public’s perception of chiropractic with some surprising results. Titled “The Prevalence, Patterns, and Predictors of Chiropractic Usage Among U.S. Adults” the study surveyed over 38,000 adults and the results showed that the public’s perception of chiropractic’s benefits maybe closer to what DD envisioned than what we thought.

In a question as to reasons to use chiropractic, 43.3% responded it was for general wellness, disease prevention. Another telling answer was to a question asking how important chiropractic is in maintaining health and well-being. 91.4% of the respondents answered it was important!

Yes, we still have a long way to go because the survey also concluded that the number one reason people sought out chiropractic care was for either neck or low back pain.

The good news is that after 122 years since chiropractic’s inception, policy makers are now looking to our profession for answers as the country reels from a broken healthcare system and a society plagued with an epidemic of opioid addiction and overdoses.

Despite the pharmaceutical industry’s stranglehold on lawmakers, some states like Ohio, Rhode Island and West Virginia are starting to actually mandate chiropractic care before a patient undergoes high-risk addictive opioids or surgery.

The tide is changing and we, as chiropractors, must be ready to serve the growing numbers of patients that desperately need what only we can provide. Care that is unique to chiropractic.

The ICA will continue to promote, protect and advance chiropractic worldwide as it has for 92 years. However, it is necessary that every practicing chiropractor understands how critical it is for them to support their State and National Association if chiropractic is to move forward.

If you are not a member, I invite you to join the ICA today!

P.S. The ICA is here to serve you. If you have any comments, questions, or concerns, please contact ICA President Dr George Curry at ICApresidentcurry@gmail.com. Click here to join the ICA.
