President's Message

CHAPTER TWO

I am very grateful to the GCC membership for electing me to a second term as President of the Georgia Council of Chiropractic. On behalf of all the newly elected board members and myself, I appreciate your vote of confidence. It is an honor and a privilege for all of us to serve you and the chiropractic profession for another two years.

My previous term was focused on implementation of several key strategies to help us thrive into the future. With the help and direct input of the GCC Board of directors, several major action steps were taken.

We have converted the majority of our members onto a 3 tier membership system.  Basic membership; VIP membership; and the top tier, Founder's Circle membership. The response has been phenomenal. The GCC now boasts one of the largest Doctor memberships since inception. Amongst this amazing support, more than 15% are Founder's Circle.

We have switched to a more grass roots movement in our Continuing Education with CE's AROUND THE STATE. This is directly aligned with the GCC mission statement as we help develop subluxation-based chiropractors all over the state.

The grand finale of my first term had to be at the Annual Virgil Smith Memorial Legislative Luncheon during the GCC's convention.  The Chairperson for the Georgia Health and Human Services Committee, Rep. Sharon Cooper, spoke to attendees and offered her full support for subluxation-based chiropractic care.  This is HUGE for securing our right to practice for years to come.  As I sat in the audience I felt so humbled by the thought of how proud DR. SID WILLIAMS would have been to see such a pledge from the Chairperson of the most important committee as it pertains to chiropractic.  We won a huge victory that weekend and I am grateful to Dr. Tim Langley for helping connect Rep. Cooper to our organization.

The previous term in office we developed these and several other strategies, the next term is focused on spreading them and further securing subluxation-based care in Georgia. Please do your part and support your state organization as your right to practice depends on it.

 Thank you.

Awais Butt, D.C.
President
Georgia Council of Chiropractic

Representative Sharon Cooper Addresses GCC Convention

by Tim Langley, DC, GCC Board Member

Rep. Sharon Cooper, Chairman of the Health and Human Service Committee of the Georgia House of Representatives was the Guest of Honor and featured speaker at the Legislative luncheon at the GCC’s Fall Convention. This successful event was held at the Marriott Northwest Hotel on August 29th and 30th.

Representative Cooper from House district 32, spoke about her commitment to protect the right of Georgia residents to get quality healthcare in every realm. She emphasized that when there’s a conflict between the interest of the People and the professions, she will always default to the interest of the People.

She emphasized two main points that resonated with those in attendance. The first was that she loved chiropractic and that she had been a lifetime chiropractic patient herself. She has stated emphatically that chiropractors “own” the vertebral subluxation and that will likely never change in Georgia. Further, as long as she is Chairman of the HHS Committee (and as far ahead as she can see) there will NEVER be room for drugs and surgery as part of the Chiropractic Scope of Practice in Georgia.

The other point Rep. Cooper made was that we need to be more politically involved in STATE politics since the laws that govern how we practice are written and enforced at the state level. She shared how the trial lawyer’s association embarked on a campaign to develop relationships with EVERY state legislator and encouraged us to do the same. I’m proud to say that the GCC has embarked on a similar campaign of which you will soon be  more details.

We greatly appreciate Rep. Cooper’s efforts in the Legislature and especially her presence at our convention.

Inferiority Complex and Chiropractic Medicine

by Bobby Braile, DC, FICA
GCC Past President

The Georgia Council of Chiropractic has recently been the recipient of some comments from the self-appointed leadership of a quasi-chiropractic group in Florida whose goal is to bring pharmaceuticals into our profession. The comments mimic the rhetoric that continually comes from this group in response to any organization that challenges their premise.

The rationale being used is always self-centered and never takes into account the public’s need. Their arguments suggest that our profession would benefit from having the ability to prescribe medications to our patients. Although this premise falls into a hypothetical discussion that cannot be proven, history has shown that no expansion of scope has ever brought more patients, more respect, or an increase in reimbursement.

This self-centered discussion fails to look at what is best for the public.  In July of 2013, the publication Mayo Clinic Proceedings, reported on research showing that 68.1 percent of the U.S. population is on a prescription medication. This is the highest rate, by far, in the world. Nowhere in the U.S. is there a lack of medical professionals or drug stores. So the argument of public need for chiropractors to prescribe drugs is hollow and counter-productive to the actual needs of society. In short, the public does not need us to give them drugs.

What is needed is an alternative to the pharmaceutical approach and the influence that huge industry has on healthcare. One could argue that the chiropractic offering of correction of subluxation would be swallowed up and eliminated under the enormous financial incentives offered by big-pharma. In essence, the two types of care could not co-exist in the same practice.

So, the only remaining argument for inclusion of drugs into the practice of chiropractic is that it somehow would mysteriously advance our profession and give us “parody” with our medical counterparts. Their statement “…what is so bad about a DC having parity?” rests on the notion that we are somehow inferior.  Here lies the entire attraction of this group.

The supporters of adding drugs to chiropractic play to those disgruntled DCs who neither believe in what they do, or are successful at doing it. What successful busy practitioner, who has an abundance of patients and money, would be attracted to the idea of drug inclusion? Only the seeds of discontent, failure and inferiority fuel the flames of the pro-pharma push.

Practicing chiropractic in a non-pharmaceutical mode is neither inferior nor lacking in prestige or parity. To suggest such is a total lack of confidence in what we have. The idea that our profession should move into a healing discipline that is antipodal to the chiropractic approach is neither wise professionally or in the best interest of the people we have sworn to serve.

If an individual Doctor of Chiropractic actually believes that their patients would be better served by receiving medications with their chiropractic adjustments, then there already exists an avenue for the chiropractor to do so.  All they have to do is enroll in medical school and get an MD degree.  Does the public not deserve the best trained professional in the area of healthcare they are seeking? Would the public not be better served and better protected if a professional who wanted to offer adjustments and drugs have both a DC and MD license?

The GCC clearly affirms that the public is entitled to the best trained healthcare professionals available. This means having a terminal degree in those healing arts that the professional wishes to utilize. If some chiropractors truly believe that they should be offering both chiropractic care and medical care to best serve their patients, then they should obtain a terminal degree in each.  Shortcuts in healthcare by way of weekend drug seminars or back-door legislation to expand practice scope, is neither ethical nor safe for the healthcare consumer.

Principles of Pediatric Examination

by Armand Rossi, DC

This discussion is not about how to examine a pediatric patient.  We will leave the procedures up to the individual doctor.  This discussion involves what messages we are giving to the parents and the child during the examination.

Most of us get really excited and enthusiastic when a parent, who has become a patient, wants you to check their child.  I know that I get excited about it.  I used to tell the parent, “Great, let’s see what’s going on!”  Then I would proceed to check and adjust the child, usually telling the parent to bring the child back in a week so we can see how she/he is doing.  I found out that this procedure gave the wrong message to the parent.

Think about it.  When the parent started as a patient, what did procedure did he/she go through.  Did they not have to fill out paperwork?  Have a consultation?  Have an examination of some kind?  Didn’t they get a report of findings and given a specific program of care based upon correction of their personal vertebral subluxations?  So why did we skip all of this with the child?

This sends a message to the parent that either:  (A) You don’t consider the child a real human being that needs to be cared for properly, or (B) what you did to the parent (consultation, exam, report) was not necessary.  Ultimately you and chiropractic loses when you handle this with a cavalier attitude.

When a parent brings a child into our office we:  1) Have the parent fill out the proper paperwork.  (2) Have the child play in the play area while we go over the case history with the parent.  (3) Bring the child and parent into the exam room and examine the child.  During the examination, we talk to the child and let the parent overhear, NO MATTER WHAT AGE THE CHILD IS. (4) We give the parent a report of our findings and explain the frequency of care.

By the way, many chiropractors get confused as to the frequency of care for a child.  Let’s look at it this way.  If you had an adult patient come in with very few symptoms and subluxations that could have been present for at least 5 years, how often would you see them initially?  Three times a week?  Every day?  Suppose you started a five year old with subluxations present from the birth trauma.  Why would they start at once weekly or monthly.  In our office they are checked three times a week until ready to be promoted to less frequent visits.  The difference is children respond faster than adults.

Remember the subconscious signs you give can mean the difference between casual emergency type care, and lifetime wellness care.

Vaccine Information

Parents Have a Right to Know!

by Paul Blumsack, DC, GCC Board Member

Parents have a right to know they have a choice!

Vaccinations are not a chiropractic issue until the parent of a vaccine injured child enters your practice looking for help. Why not help reduce these unnecessary injuries from happening by allowing your practice members to make informed decisions before vaccinating their child. Here are several resources for you to share with your practice members:

National Vaccine Information Center www.NVIC.org

International Pediatric Chiropractic Association. www.ICPA4KIDS.org

Barbra Loe Fisher is co-founder and president of the National Vaccine Information Center. In this interview with GCC past president, Dr Bobby Braile, she explains why she is so passionate about the subject of informed consent for vaccinations, and how the chiropractic profession impacted her organization.   (Click image below for interview)

GCC Philosophy

"Chiropractors, Do you realize you have something that can truly change the world?!"  -Dr. Dennis Heskett at GCC's September Philosophy IN Practice celebrating Chiropractic's 120th birthday in September.

"..the Spirit of God came thru Dennis Heskett & Michael Heskett Chiro reminding us how important our relationship with Him is in our work and that thru Him comes the healing for our patients and the blessings in our lives. If we would only get ourselves out of the way and allow Him to use us, then we would change the world."  - Rob DiMartino, DC, GCC Board Member.

Our next Philsoophy Night is this Saturday in Macon with Drs. Armand Rossi and Rick Franks at 5pm at the Macon Marriott City Center in conjunction with our Macon CE Express.  Join us for an uplifting, inspiring message from two ChiropracTIC Powerhouse speakers!!!  Contact the GCC office by replying to this email, or call 678-667-4567, to RSVP for this free philosophy event.
