Protecting Our Relevancy

Happy New Year to all my Chiropractic friends and family! I am excited about all the growth and abundance that we will experience in the coming months ahead!

Recently, a new patient asked me if I could write them a prescription. At first, I felt a weakness in my heart because I couldn't give this person what they wanted. The reason that I went into healthcare was to help people, but at this moment I wasn't able to do it. Then, I proudly responded to this person that I don't give out prescriptions, I correct Subluxation without the use of drugs and surgery. The patient was happy to hear my response and proclaimed that this was the best option for them. While I know sometimes this is not the outcome of such an interaction, it does occur frequently enough to tell us that people see the relevancy of subluxation based care.

This new year promises to be huge for services that enhance life. People will spend more time and money on their well-being than the previous year. Subluxation based Chiropractors are the well deserving leaders of this group. We have served humanity for its betterment for over a hundred years and this year will be the biggest yet!

We are planning on the biggest year for the GCC and Chiropractic. We have great events planned that will teach you to become a better and more successful Chiropractor. We will continue to offer our popular Nuts and Bolts seminars with new modules and new faces this year. We will continue bringing Principled Chiropractic Philosophy through an expanded schedule of Saturday Night Live, Philosophy IN Practice, Philosophy on the Farm, and Fired Up Philosophy events. And finally, we will continue to offer Continuing Education programs throughout the state with our Living the Dream in 2016 tour. Our goal is to make your CE experience more convenient and more enjoyable by bringing it closer to where you live. We are hosting the events in venues with enough room to allow for a more comfortable and open classroom. These seminars have some of the best chiropractors in the world teaching the most relevant chiropractic information. I look forward to seeing you at the next one.

Lastly, a big moment is about to take place in the next sixty days. This has to do with Medicare and changes that can affect the whole profession. After a unanimous agreement from the board, the GCC is in full support of the ICA's NATIONAL MEDICARE FAIRNESS CAMPAIGN. We believe that the campaign is congruent with our interests and we offer any help that they need. Please take a moment to look through the upcoming Medicare changes and additional information about the campaign mentioned in the article below.

Exciting things are happening! I look forward to seeing you in person this year!

Thank you.

Turn Your Vision Into Reality

by Steve Landry, DC - GCC VIP Member

I can’t believe how fast last year went by! I remember sitting down before Christmas of 2014 to set goals for 2015 where I tried to remain focused amidst the holiday clamor, and zero in on my mission and vision for the clinic. Needless to say, time flies. Hopes, expectations, joy, laughter, tears, conflicts, resolution…so many things happened in just one year—I’m sure we all could write a best-seller based on the multitude of small and big moments that occurred.

I might be sorely tempted to say everything happened by chance and circumstance, then simply move past this period of time. But as a ‘principled chiropractor,’ I believe that my story was written all along. By setting specific goals, I was taking the first steps into realizing my dreams and breaking through fears that God had set before me to tackle. And as I established these goals on paper, my eyes began to open to new territories that became very clear as I took appropriate time to adjust my life and my weekly schedule. In the process, these dreams further began to materialize as I drafted measurable objectives and identified the variety of steps and tasks necessary to help me reach and achieve them.

Years ago, before I graduated from Life University, I had set some initial, yet fairly ambitious goals for practice growth and wealth building. These were one- to three-year goals, so they were written down in a journal and then set aside to ‘percolate.’ Over time, however, as I reviewed these targets on a daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly basis, I found that these goals today are more than 90% completed.

Scientists and psychologists believe that this result—setting a goal that then gets realized—is the work of the subconscious mind.
Putting it another way, the conscious mind, in tandem with the prompting of the Holy Spirit, reveals meaningful goals, and then the subconscious mind sets to work on achieving them.

Setting and achieving goals is exciting and provides a compelling future for life itself. A goal that inspires and excites you promises a journey to a place you have never been before, and provides the target, the motivation and the drive to take necessary action and embark on the journey.

This all sounds awesome, but how do you get there?

  1. Setting realistic goals.

We often overestimate how much we can achieve in the short term and underestimate how much we can achieve in the long term. Have you ever been in a crisis moment and told yourself, “I need to be out of this situation right now, or I’m headed toward a downward spiral…but how do I stop the fall?!”

The key is that we need to be setting goals over the next 12 months that are reasonably ambitious, but definitely doable. Typically, however, there are internal issues of the heart and mind that need to change in order to meet and achieve your goals. This is why the Georgia Chiropractic Council is a great place to help you get refocused.

  1. Be prepared to give what it takes.

Achieving goals requires action, and action often requires stepping into fear. The desire to achieve a goal must out-weigh the “comfort” of staying paralyzed and standing still where you are. The goal, therefore, has to be compelling, exciting, energizing, creative, and it has to be yours.

God will reveal it or you will dream it. Either way, He will confirm it. You know it's real and important if it keeps coming up and it burns a hole in your heart. With this kind of goal you have a much higher tolerance for training in the pain and stepping into fear. But you have to be willing to pay the price.

  1. Be strong and courageous.

Even with the best of goals, you must be courageous. Courage can be defined as “taking action in the face of fear.” Going for a goal you value will always require courage because there is risk involved—risk of failure, embarrassment and/or struggle.

In the book of Joshua, the Israelites were told by God that they will occupy the Promised Land, that they will cross over the Jordan River into a land of milk and honey—a great land with great potential. They, as a people, were to take action steps and cross the Jordan in flood season, and then walk into and possess the land that was promised them. The problem, however, was that there were giants in the land and they would need to go to battle to claim that land. Look again at how often Joshua and the Israelites are reminded that they need to be courageous:

Joshua 1:6,7 "Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them. Be strong and very courageous."

Joshua 1:9 "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."

Deuteronomy 31:6 "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you."

So it is for us. We need to be courageous in order to reach our goals. There is no way around it—we must face our fears head on and go through them.

But what if you did everything according to plan and still missed your goals? Well, that’s simply an unreached goal! You may have missed the final target, but you are not a 'goal misser.' There is a great chasm of difference here. Missing a goal should cause you only to re-set and move on. Taking on the identity of a 'goal misser,' however, will paralyze you from making future goals and taking future risks.

Take a glance back in your rearview mirror and analyze where, why and what you missed in 2015.  Consider what you might need to do differently in 2016 to reach a better result.

Then look ahead through the front windshield and live FULL OUT today toward reaching your compelling future!

A first step today could be to buy a 12-month calendar and put it on your wall at home or at the office. Write down all the GCC events of the year and plan to attend at least one event to help focus your vision and get you on fire for Chiropractic, for your patients, but most importantly, for yourself! This can help set you on the road to an amazing year ahead in 2016.

Be Blessed,

Dr. Steve

ICA Launches Major New Medicare Fairness Campaign

The International Chiropractors Association (ICA) has launched a new National Medicare Fairness Campaign to build grassroots support for badly needed reforms in the chiropractic portion of the federal Medicare program. "The objective of this important undertaking is to mobilize DCs and patients in the tens of thousands and to organize them through a petition campaign and a legislative action data base," said ICA Vice President Dr. Stephen Welsh. "We recognize that this is going to be a long-term effort and that it will take a great deal of coordination and communication to accomplish our goal. This drive marks the beginning of the effort on the part of the ICA."

The ICA is actively promoting legislative language that will expand the range of Medicare covered services but also help ensure that the existing coverage for the adjustment to correct a subluxation will be retained in the Medicare statute, section 1861(r) 5, which defines the participation of a chiropractor as a physician in the Medicare system.

ICA recognizes the powerful potential of highlighting to policy makers the issues of fairness and patient choice in Medicare, a system that presently tends to drive patients onto more expensive medical care by strictly limiting choices, especially choices of different types of providers, even though other, non-MD providers are fully qualified and licensed to perform Medicare covered services. The model on which ICA seeks to build its campaign is the concept of an across-the-board non-discrimination policy for Medicare, much like that which has been incorporated into the Affordable Care Act.

On January 1, 2014 the non-discrimination provisions of Section 2706 of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) became effective. The nondiscrimination provision of that act states:

A group health plan and a health insurance issuer offering group or individual health insurance coverage shall not discriminate with respect to participation under the plan or coverage against any health care provider who is acting within the scope of that provider's license or certification under applicable State law.

While this provision applies to private health insurance plans regulated at the state level, the Medicare Part B Program has no such provision. The result has been that the Medicare Beneficiaries that choose to seek care from a chiropractor are required to pay for their exams, X-Rays and are reimbursed for only the chiropractic adjustment to correct a subluxation.

The basis for this is how chiropractors are defined as participating physicians under the Federal Medicare Statutes (Sec.1861(r)5: "a chiropractor who is licensed as such by the State (or in a State which does not license chiropractors as such, is legally authorized to perform the services of a chiropractor in the jurisdiction in which he performs such services), and who meets uniform minimum standards promulgated by the Secretary, but only for the purpose of sections 1861(s)(1) and 1861(s)(2)(A) and only with respect to treatment by means of manual manipulation of the spine (to correct a subluxation) which he is legally authorized to perform by the State or jurisdiction in which such treatment is provided."

Isn't it time to get rid of the "only", and remove the current restriction which unfairly penalizes the patient that chooses a safer, less expensive form of care? ICA believes it is time to aggressively target the discriminatory language of the current law and to seek fairness for the chiropractic patients. Don't they deserve equal treatment under the law?

Act today and become part of this historic Medicare reform effort. Click here to sign the petition and become part of a powerful grassroots movement on behalf of fairness. The time is now. Please, stand up and be counted. The profession and the patients we serve deserve nothing less.
