Daniel Shulman Presents Stravinsky's Story of a Soldier

 This performance combines chamber music, dance, and spoken word to tell the tale of a soldier making a deal with the devil and becoming a victim of his own greed. Featuring Daniel Shulman, Kaori Washiyama, Susan Daves, Matthew Gold, Paul Green, Wesley Hopper, Robert Zimmerman, Adam Shulman as the Soldier, Jack Boggan as the Devil, and Siri Allison as the Narrator. This program will also feature Giuseppe Tartini’s The Devil’s Trill Sonata (performed by Kaori Washiyama), Franz Schubert’s Margaret at the Spinning Wheel (performed by Rebecca Iris Rogers), and The Legend of Bottle Hill (told by Nancy Marie Payne).

Daniel Shulman, conductor and pianist, is founding director of the Light Fantastic Players (1971-76), In the Music Room (1987-92) and the Shulman Concerts (1994-2006). He has served on the faculties of the California Institute of the Arts, C.W. Post College and the City College of New York. He has conducted orchestras and ensembles throughout the United States, including the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the MondayEvening Concerts--in Los Angeles and begun by Igor Stravinsky--many of New York’s major new music and chamber groups; also at the International Holland Festival, in China and Japan.  

Kaori Washiyama, violin, is a competition-winning soloist, director of the Japan-based Kaori Washiyama Chamber Music Series, principal violinist of the Shulman Concerts and a member of the Bennington College faculty. She was awarded a major prize in Kyoto, Japan, for her performances of Schoenberg’s “Pierrot Lunaire” and Stravinsky’s “L’Histoire du Soldat,” both conducted by her husband, Daniel Shulman, in 2000.

Susan Daves, bassoon, has served as principal bassoon of the Louisiana Symphony Orchestra and performs similarly with the Albany, Schenectady, Catskill and Glens Falls Symphonies. She has taught at Loyola and Tulane Universities and is currently on the faculty of Skidmore College.

Matthew Gold, percussion, is a member of the Talea Ensemble and the Taleyon Percussion Group. He is an Artist-in-Residence at Williams College and on the faculty of the Wellesley Composer’s Conference. He appears with many orchestras that include the Albany Symphony and the NYC Ballet.

Paul Green, clarinet, was awarded the Young Concert Artists Award in his early years, and has been a soloist with the National Orchestral Association, the Santo Domingo Music Festival Orchestra, and the Charlotte and Hartford Symphonies, among others. He has served as principal clarinetist of the Florida Grand Opera, the Atlantic Classical Orchestra and the Symphony of the Americas. Mr. Green founded both the Gold Coast Chamber Music Festival and the The Summer Celebration of Jewish Music in the Berkshires. teaches at Skidmore and Williams Colleges.

Wesley Hopper, trombone, is a member of the Triton Brass Quintet. His studies took place at Boston Conservatory and he has performed subsequently with many Boston-based ensembles, including the Boston Pops Orchestra. He performs with the Vermont, Portland and Albany Symphonies, and the Rhode Island Philharmonic. He teaches at Boston College.

Robert Zimmerman, contrabass, holds a DMA degree from the Eastman School of Music, where he focused his study on Stravinsky’s “L’Histoire du Soldat.” Mr. Zimmerman was a member of the Syracuse Symphony for 14 years. He has appeared as well in the orchestras of any number of Broadway musicals. He has taught at Colgate University and is presently on the faculty of Williams College.
