Join Louisa Matthew, Professor of Art History at Union College, for a special presentation about art from Jerusalem. Where does one even start to understand what is arguably the most complicated city on the face of the earth? The spectacular exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2016 will give us a starting point. We will examine the material culture of the city, concentrating on what is arguably one of its “Golden Ages,” the 9th through the 15th centuries. Art (defined broadly), and architecture can tell us a great deal about the tastes, desires, and beliefs of the diverse populations that have created the essential fabric of the city. They can also help to explain the disagreements and conflicts that have defined its reputation for two thousand years. Whether or not the past has anything to teach us, the material culture of Jerusalem may still impress and astonish. This event ties in with Hubbard Hall’s Holiday breakfast focusing on the foods and traditions of Jerusalem on Saturday, December 9 at 9 am and 11 am.
