Explore the shared dynamism of piano music from the 17th century to the current day. Judith Gordon, who is on the faculty at Smith College and a consulting director and frequent performer at Music from Salem, will introduce and play works by Scarlatti, Mozart, Chopin and Debussy, as well as John Harbison and Lee Hyla, composers whose music she has premiered and with whom she has often collaborated. Join this informal expedition into the ways that these very different-sounding pieces talk to each other, and to listeners.
Pianist Judith Gordon gave her debut recital at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and has been soloist with the Boston Pops as well as groups including Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Boston Modern Orchestra Project and Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra. In 1997 she was named 'Musician of the Year' by the Boston Globe. She has premiered music by John Harbison, Lee Hyla, Peter Lieberson, Salvatore Macchia, James Matheson, James Primosch, Donald Wheelock, and many others. Gordon has collaborated with an exceptionally wide range of artists and ensembles, among them singers Janice Felty, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, Lisa Saffer, and James Maddalena; violinists Rose Mary Harbison, Movses Pogossian, and Andrew Kohji Taylor; violists Marcus Thompson, and Roger Tapping; cellists Andres Diaz, Yo-Yo Ma, and Rhonda Rider; pianists Robert Levin and Peter Serkin; Essential Music, Imani Winds, and the Borromeo, Daedalus, and Lydian String Quartets. A graduate of New England Conservatory of Music, Gordon is an associate professor at Smith College.Concert will take place at 8:00pm at Hubbard Hall Mainstage in Cambridge, NY.
