Teaching through Art: Monarch Migration and Day of the Dead with Jeffrey Nichols

Every fall, Monarch butterflies journey south and rest through the winter in the mountainous forests of central Mexico.  Imagine the spectacle as their paths converge!  Millions of butterflies fill the skies, and then cover nearly every inch of the forest – floor to canopy – in a dense layer of leaf-like wings.  This annual phenomenon once inspired religious celebrations among ancient Aztec people and continues to influence art, culture, and scientific research today.

Please join us for a hands-on professional development workshop to learn more about Monarch butterflies and the rich cultural traditions associated with their migration – including the upcoming Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).  We’ll engage with a presentation about Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), view a traditional altar but that’s not all!  We’ll start a fun Monarch art project that you can take to your school and use as a springboard for students to explore core content in Science, Social Studies, Writing, and the Arts!  We will also present information about this year’s Community Schools Art Project for our Festival Del Dia De Los Muertos (LASC’s Day of the Dead Festival: Sunday, November 1^st, 5-9PM) and how to get involved.  For more information about the LASC’s Community Schools Art Project and how to integrate it into your curriculum please contact us 859-252-5222.
