Winter 2014/15

LearnServe and Alumni are Harris' Heroes

As our region counted down to the new year, local newscaster Leon Harris featured LearnServe International – along with two alums, Yasmine Arrington and Jessica Yang – as Harris’ Heroes for December 31, 2014.  We were proud to be recognized by ABC 7 for our work in the DC region and our impact on our students and alumni individually and in our community.

You're Invited to LearnServe's Gala!

Cold outside? Warm up with chili, soup, local brew and the LearnServe family as we celebrate social innovation. Bestselling author and LearnServe parent Dan Pink will speak to the future of learning, drawing on his expertise in motivation, human behavior, and the modern economy. We will honor accomplished alumna Yasmine Arrington, and outstanding educator Eric Goldstein. Join us for the Snow Ball Effect - demonstrating how all of us working together can create change that one person could not accomplish alone.

LearnServe Innovators' Coffee House 2014

ICYMI (In case you missed it), our 2014 Innovators' Coffee House was a smashing success! We're so proud of each and every one of our Fellows who were brave enough to present their venture pitches on stage. Our Incubator students were in attendance as well, talking to guests about their projects and serving coffee at their own tables before the program began.

Shout-out to our Alumni Ambassadors, Venture Mentors, and Fellows families for their support as we launch into the spring semester and get ready for the big show – the spring Panels and Venture Fair!

Get Motivated With Music for 2015

This time of year, with the holidays behind us and so many tragedies on the news, it's easy to get a little down and discouraged about the state of things and our ability to do anything about it.  Don't despair!  As always, we at LearnServe believe in the power of ordinary people to work together to do extraordinary things.  But the first step is believing that you can.

Luckily for you, Allison, our band-geek on staff, has a gift for you.  She polled our staff, students, and alumni to find out what songs help them stay motivated and inspired to work for change when they face obstacles, and she's sharing them with you.  Check out the Inspiration Playlist on our blog or on our YouTube channel to listen without interruptions.  Then get out there and show the world what you can do!

Staff Spotlight: Ryan Dalton

Ryan Dalton joined the LearnServe Fellows Program as a Co-Leader last year. He first learned of the program through American University School of International Service’s relationship with LearnServe Interational. Ryan joined the program, eager to apply some of the training facilitation skills that he had developed while serving in the U.S. Peace Corps in Togo from 2010 to 2012.

For his day job, Ryan works for the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization working to support and strengthen democratic institutions worldwide through citizen participation, openness and accountability in government. He works primarily on a program in Nigeria, which aims to empower civil society organizations to build confidence in the electoral process and strengthen their capacity to advocate for issues, particularly those concerning marginalized groups.

For Ryan, the LearnServe Fellows Program is a special opportunity for everyone involved. The Fellows gain a great deal of insight, become stronger leaders, and channel their passion into real change. At the same time, LearnServe staff never face a dull or uninspiring moment; all of the Fellows are so tremendously brilliant and generate this confidence that makes one feel that the world can only get better.
