In Her Own Words

My name is Noun Synath, and I am 22 years old. I was born on August 23, 1990 in Roka village, Seung commune, Ochrov district, in the Banteay Meanchey province of Cambodia. I am the first child in the family and have two younger brothers and one sister. I graduated from Koub high school in 2011 despite my family living in poverty.

Before I received my scholarship, my family lived in poor conditions with no transportation, and no money to buy study materials. I could not go to school regularly, and could not study in extra classes. I thought I would never finish my high school and wanted to drop out of school in in order to work, which would help my struggling family.

After I received my scholarship from GATE supported by Lotus Outreach, I was extremely happy. I got a lot of material support from the donor through GATE such as: study materials, shoes, hat, raincoat, a bicycle, money for extra classes, food, a home stay, health care, and a monthly stipend. On top of all this, GATE provided life skills training course and invited all scholarship recipients to participate in a workshop or some social activities. All of the above mentioned things were useful to everyone. All of the help from the donor and GATE’s staff truly made my and my family’s lives so much better.

In 2011, I passed the national high school exam. Due to my passion for studying, I suggested to my parents that I wanted to pursue my study at Royal University of Agriculture and Rural Development in Phnom Penh, despite the university fee. However, my family is currently unable to support me due to the high cost of living in Phnom Penh. House rentals, document processing, and food are all a burden. Thus, I am very worried about those things because my family wants to help but is unable to solve the problem.

I hope that the donors will support my study in university until I finish due to the fact my family is disadvantaged economically. To conclude, I would like to express my heartfelt thankfulness to Lotus Outreach and GATE staff for your support so far. I wish the donors good luck, happiness, and success in all their endeavors.
