In Her Own Words

Greetings! My name is Pov Vannary. I am 21 years old, born in April of 1992 in Thsard Deum Thkov district, Chamkarmon commune, Phnom Penh. Since that time I have moved to live in Khvav village, Dongkao commune, Dongkao district, Phnom Penh.  My father, Heng Samnang, died at the age of 57. He was a construction worker who worked for only 8000 Cambodian riel a day (2 USD). My mother, Pov Nisay Thom, is a 48 year old house wife. I have three sisters and one brother and I currently live with four people in my extended family.  My mother, one of my sisters, and my 75 year-old grandmother, Pich Sarun, and myself live in a building on the water with a lot of rubbish lying around.

I received a GATE scholarship in grade 9 in 2007 when I was 18 years old, thanks to the school principal at Phsar Deum Thkov Bunrany Hunsen School. Three weeks after submitting the application form I was informed by the school teacher that I was selected to be GATE scholarship recipient. Thanks to the comprehensive support I have received from LO, I have completed my high school education with a diploma.

Sadly, due my mother’s lack of funds, my education had been temporarily halted. I could not enroll in university on time after I graduated from high school. Thus, I have decided to work as an employee of the Maly Treatment Shop with a small income only 100 USD a month.

One year passed by after I graduated high school when I received a call from the CWCC staff and STREAM Officer to join a meeting. In the meeting she encouraged me to continue studying at university, and told me the importance of attending university, which would enable me to find better job opportunities post graduation. I agreed and accompanied her to join the scholarship forum in August 2012. I was very fortunate to receive a 50% scholarship from Chamrouen University of Poly-technology and the rest of my fee was covered by the generosity of my elder sister. Ever since that day, I have been extremely happy that I have been given a chance to study at university, much like the other GATE scholarship recipients. I began my classes in mid December 2012, in the field of Finance and Banking.

Since my new life at university has begun, I would like to say thanks to all of the GATE staff for their continued support so far. I wish to impart my thanks to the donors of LO for your consideration of supporting me at university. With the aid of your support, I promise to be a good student, daughter, and citizen for school, family, and society. Finally I wish all the donors and to have good luck, prosperity, success, and happiness in the future.
