In Her Own Words

My name is Yan Sinat and I was born on September 8, 1992 in Prech Key Village, Ta Phou Commune, Svay Chek District, Banteay Meanchey Province. My current address is at Kompong Svay Village, Sereysophoan Town, Banteay Meanchey Province. My stepfather Rum Khat (42) and my mother Pheng Somneang (42) are both farmers. There are eight people in my household: my old granny, my uncle, my parents, and my 4 siblings (2 girls).

I have been in scholarship program since 2009. Before joining GATE, my family struggled to support my schooling. My mother tried to pull me out of school many times, but she could see how much I loved school and how hard I worked so she let me and my younger brother stay. My older brother was not so fortunate, and he had to drop out of school to go work in Thailand to support the family. He didn’t want to go.

Knowing my situation, a teacher encouraged me to apply for GATE. The GATE assessment team reviewed my application and conducted a home visit, and I was selected to join the program in 2009. I was extremely happy that I could continue my studies and up until this moment, I never imagined that I would be able to finish.

After passing the high school board exam, I applied for teacher training and nursing programs as well as a scholarship at university. Unfortunately, none of my applications were successful. My parents ultimately decided to pay the school fee so I could complete my bachelor’s degree at the University of Management and Economics but I still could not afford food, mandatory computer and English courses, room rental, and utilities.

After learning that that Lotus Outreach would continue to support me through university, I was very excited and happy. I really appreciate that you care so much about me. You have saved my life!

I would like to sincerely thank Lotus Outreach and the GATE program staff for sacrificing your valuable time and efforts to support me from lower secondary school through university. I will repay your good deed by committing to study hard. I wish you good luck, good health, and success in everything you do.
