Join the new Ocean Acidification Information Exchange

The Ocean Acidification Information Exchange is a new interactive website that is catalyzing response to ocean acidification through collaboration and information sharing. We invite you to join this online conversation! Members of the OA Information Exchange are using the site’s collaborative tools to share resources, engage in online discussions, and interact with people in other disciplines and regions to build a well-informed community working to respond and adapt to ocean acidification. Anyone working on or with an interest in ocean acidification can join the OA Information Exchange, including government, tribal and academic research scientists, citizen scientists, experiential and formal educators, NGO employees, marine resources managers, policy makers, concerned citizens, aquaculturists, people in the fishing industry, technology developers, data managers, and others.

OCA Monitoring Workshop Report available on NECAN website

The workshop report from the NROC/NECAN OCA Monitoring Workshop that was held on December 1, 2017 is now available. If you would like to read a summary of the workshop, you can view the report on the NECAN website. The workshop was held to achieve the following goals: (1) identify what management and policy questions could be addressed by enhanced OCA monitoring; (2) discuss collaborative opportunities to integrate, enhance and expand OCA and nutrient monitoring throughout the region to address these questions; and (3) broaden the conversation about OCA and coastal resources to local resource managers who may be new to OCA, but are already dealing with other environmental issues that coincide with or worsen OCA. Upcoming NECAN webinar - Dr. Liqing Jiang, "Ocean Acidification Data Stewardship (OADS) Project"

Please join us for our next webinar in a series on topics related to regional coastal and ocean acidification. Dr. Liqing Jiang (NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information) will present information about the Ocean Acidification Data Stewardship (OADS) Project. The Ocean Acidification Data Stewardship (OADS) Project is a data management project within NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) in Silver Spring, MD. OADS was established in 2012 and is funded by NOAA's Ocean Acidification Program (OAP) as well as NCEI. The primary mission of OADS is to manage ocean acidification data collected from OAP funded projects. OADS leverages some of the best data management infrastructure in the world at NCEI to help PIs put their data into a long-term archive, provide version control, offer stable data citation and meet their NOAA Public Access for Research Results (PARR) requirements. Additionally, OADS manages rich metadata information supporting the needs of the ocean carbon and acidification community. OADS manages a wide spread of OA data sets, including chemical data collected from bottle, underway, time series, biological data collected from laboratory experiment, and others. Data access is provided through a newly established Ocean Carbon and Acidification Portal, which allows users to discover OA data from the entire NCEI ocean archive.

Ocean and Coastal Acidification (OCA) Monitoring: Training Webinars for Citizen Scientists

Join us for a series of webinars to discuss the role of citizen scientists in ocean and coastal acidification (OCA) monitoring. Researchers have found that local conditions are a major factor affecting vulnerability to coastal acidification. Different locations will be affected by acidification in different ways, and collaboration among local research and citizen science groups is needed for regional action. Citizen science programs and researchers can take steps now to help protect marine environments from ocean and coastal acidification. These online webinars will introduce a discussion about the importance of engaging in ocean and coastal acidification monitoring right now. This effort is supported by the NOAA Ocean Acidification Program and facilitated by the Northeast Coastal Acidification Network through NERACOOS.
