Description

Old-growth forests touch the soul of many people for diverse reasons. Some hear the echoes of Native Americans or the first settlers. Some simply feel the great age of the trees, and revere them for their antiquity. And some understand the scientific value of old-growth forests as benchmarks for how forests thrive when human impacts are minimized. Join John Bates, local author and naturalist as he tells stories of how and why Wisconsin cut over 99%of its original forests, discuss some of the ecology of old-growth, and describe some specific old-growth forests that are left in Wisconsin. John is currently working with the UW Press to publish a book on Wisconsin’s old-growth forests in autumn 2015. Program held at Camp Jorn YMCA.
