“Beyond the Fence Line: How Landscape Ecology can Inform Habitat Management Decisions”

Speaker: Scott Walter, Ruffed Grouse Society Western Great Lakes Regional Wildlife Biologist

One of the primary reasons individuals own land is to enjoy wildlife.  Engaged landowners   also pursue habitat enhancement as a means of improving the quantity and/or quality of  habitat that's available to their favorite wildlife species.  It is often difficult, however, to achieve population-level benefits for target wildlife species unless landowners understand, and embrace, how wildlife populations are influenced by the interspersion of habitat across a landscape.  Understanding how landscape influences wildlife populations is complex, but    exciting, and can bring new insight to your appreciation of Wisconsin's wildlife resources, and result in new approaches to habitat management in your area.  Scott Walter, former UDNR Upland Wildlife Ecologist and current Ruffed Grouse Society Western Great Lakes Regional Wildlife Biologist, will review landscape habitat management strategies and current projects supporting Wisconsin's Ruffed and Sharp-tailed Grouse.
