Description

Broken MesaAre you looking for a nice hike to kick off the new year? Join Janie O'Rourke on a PEEC hike to explore Broken Mesa.

The hike starts in Pajarito Acres, a subdivision of White Rock. The hike, which is about 3 to 4 miles long and takes approximately 3 hours, is highlighted with expansive mesa and mountain views and interesting geologic features. The trail begins on a dirt road but soon drops down into Potrillo and then Water Canyon on a narrow trail. The walking in and out of the canyon is moderately strenuous and there is some scrambling to the top of a small mesa. Participants should bring a lunch or snack, water, sunscreen, and wear appropriate layers for changing weather.

This hike is limited to a maximum of 20 and advance registration is required, so be sure to sign up soon!

Janie O'Rourke has lived in Los Alamos since 1964. As a runner, she became interested in trails, especially historic trails, and open space. To protect these local resources, she was one of the founders of Los Alamos Pathways Association (LAPA), which eventually became a subcommittee to the County's Parks and Recreation Board. The TAPS (Trails and Pathways Subcommittee) helped create the County's current trails plan, a plan from which the idea for PEEC originated.

Driving directions to trailhead: Drive on State Road 4 to White Rock. On reaching White Rock, stay on SR4 and continue driving west until you reach Monte Rey Drive South. Turn left on Monte Rey South, then turn right off of Monte Rey onto Potrillo Drive. Just before the intersection of Potrillo with Rio Bravo Dr., there is a small trail head on the right. On some maps the trail is called Bacabi Lane, but it is not currently signed. Parking at the trailhead is limited, but you can pull off the road and park along the edge of Potrillo or Rio Bravo Drive.
