Description

Raccoons playing in a backyardYou may have seen homes around Los Alamos that display a National Wildlife Federation sign designating their property as a Certified Wildlife Habitat. Have you ever wondered what that means?  It simply indicates that the owners of the property have met four basic habitat requirements (providing food, water sources, places for cover, and places to raise young) for protecting our local wildlife. But why stop there? Let's make the entire county of Los Alamos a Community Wildlife Habitat.  This PEEC forum will give community members a better idea of how we can do that, so that as a community we are doing our best to provide for the habitat needs of our wildlife.  Each featured expert will present information and answer audience questions.   The panel of experts includes Steve Cary on “Butterflies,” Bob Walker on “The Best Places to See Birds in Los Alamos and White Rock,” Hari Viswanathan on “How to Discourage Wild Animals From Becoming a Nuisance,” and Terry Foxx on “Our Changing Landscape and Invasive Plants.”

The steps toward becoming a Community Wildlife Habitat are already under way as we already have over 100 homes, 2 schools and 4 public places in Los Alamos County with Certified Wildlife Habitat designations. What are the next steps? We’d like to increase the number of habitat certifications and conduct more community outreach events, clean-ups and restoration projects.

What does the community “get” for becoming a Certified Wildlife Habitat? We get the pride and satisfaction of doing something good for our community and our wildlife, and the satisfaction of knowing that we are supporting a national effort.
