Join Alex and April on a guided tour to a unique petroglyph wall overlooking the beautiful Gilman Tunnels and Jemez Pueblo. Participants will travel on foot up a 900 foot rocky slope to the little-known Fertility Wall.  As the name suggests, this expansive example of native drawings depict family lineages, fertility deities and rituals, and contain some of the most impressive examples of Kokopelli in the area.  There will be other brief stops on the loop, including an old mining camp. Once at the top, we will spend some time discussing and examining the various panels, while participants take photos and indulge in our delicious snacks.

Participants must be in proper physical condition to hike in elevation and on uneven terrain. The trip will traverse the Rio Guadalupe and involve a 900 ft elevation gain on loose rock and sand.

Meet at Amada’s in La Cueva by 7:30 a.m. The Fertility Wall hike is strenuous—although the hike from the dirt road is only a mile and a half, it’s a 1,000 foot elevation gain, scrambling over steep terrain.  Expect to return to La Cueva about 2 p.m.
