Our mission: To inspire stewardship of Pennsylvania’s state parks and forests.

It was a quiet week here. Not so much in Philadelphia. Congratulations to those Eagles; I think it's safe to say that Steeler fans will need to cut them some slack from here on in and say a little quiet "thank you" to the Lads in Green.

Word came that the Friends of Ohiopyle had spectacular snow for this year's WinterFest where things were definitely a little more wild and wooly than the scene depicted in this week's beautiful masthead by David Schmude at Oil Creek State Park. Give a click and breathe a deep sigh!

Teams are forming for the Highmark Walk. Come on out and join us on May 19. We're a fun group, you know!

The registration link (http://hcf.convio.net/ppff) is live and ready.

Didja know that Sunday is "Make a Friend Day?" You might have read a couple of weeks ago that the UK has appointed a national Minister for Loneliness simply because we seem in this age of big and small screen domination to have forgotten that we humans need each other. My simplest example of this is yoga class. I practice at home a good bit (okay, not as often as I intend) but there is just nothing like actually going to a class and being in the same room with other practitioners. All of this is by way of reminder that PPFF has a whole boatload of Friends Groups who would love to make your acquaintance.

At work and play in the parks and forests

If you're not played out from Eagles Victory Parades or days off school this week, there's plenty to get your blood pumping this weekend. Played out? Not you!

North

If you don't get enough winter festing on Saturday, R.B. Winter has you covered on Sunday with SnowFest 2018.

South

Here's hoping the weather is just as nice as last week for the Prince Gallitzin Winter Fun Day tomorrow.

East

Lackawanna State Park is also host to a Winterfest tomorrow. Think snow!

West

Last and certainly not least they're in a festival mood at Moraine all day tomorrow with a Habitat for Humanity fundraiser day chockful of action. Did someone say "chili cookoff?"

No matter what region of the commonwealth you want to visit, our website Events and the DCNR Calendar of Events are great sources for things to see and do. Bookmark them!

SO happy to report that WinterFest at Ohiopyle was "the busiest ever" as related on the park's FB page. I COULD post here a picture of the pick-up trucks parked along Sugarloaf Road because while it might not be a particularly scenic shot it is indicative of a really busy day and that is SO good for the area. There are a bunch of really fun shots in the Winterfest FB album so check them out. This is just one look at happy faces.

Take five for trivia

I did manage to confuse a few people with my question as to what do Charles Howard Curran and Punxsutawney Phil have in common. My favorite answer came from Mary Ann that they are both "chucks!" True indeed. However, my preferred answer is that Dr. Curran, the former curator of the American Museum of Natural History, in the way of a true scientist gathered up a band of friends in 1948 and set out for Bear Mountain, NY, where they performed an "exhaustive" study of the woolly bear caterpillar to determine whether its winter prediction powers were legitimate. They may not have reached any real scientific conclusion but they did in fact call themselves The Original Society of the Friends of the Woolly Bear. And that counts for a lot!

So the good doctor and Phil share a penchant for prognostication we might say.

For this week, where did Nescopeck (see below) get its name?

Send in your answer and we'll enter your correct response into our monthly prize drawing. All correct answers each week will go into the hat and at the end of the month we'll draw one lucky winner. The more correct answers you submit in a month (up to four or the occasional five depending on the month), the more chances you'll have to win.

In closing

Not to be outdone by the westerners, Nescopeck State Park had its own Winterfest last weekend. No wonder the park is using this shot as its cover photo on Facebook!
