Summary
Maurice Denis, a French painter active between 1884 and 1943, contributed by his artistic theories and painterly practice to the development of many of the major schools of painting in the early twentieth century, including Symbolism, neo-Impressionism, Fauvism, Cubism and the rise of abstraction in art. From the age of fifteen, in 1884, he was conscious of painting as a religious vocation, and as a form of Christian service to the wider culture. By reading his spiritual journal and contemplating his paintings, we will reflect together on the dialogue between our own religious faith and its cultural context today.
