Hello my name is Katia Chavira and currently pursuing a major in Geography at Kansas State University!
Throughout my childhood, my family was a part of an economic push/pull factor that motivated us to migrant. My fathers job in particular was the reason for us having to move every five to six months. My father and family members followed job opportunites whether it was working at feedlots, daires, or construction. As a child my favorite thing to do was to take off his smelly work boots when he got home from long hours at work. My father never complained. That made me extremely proud to say he was my dad and worked at the dairy. I told him I wanted to be like him when I grew up. He got upset and said I should not be pursing to be like him instead I should strive to work at a place with air conditing in the summers and heaters for the cold winters. My father wanted better life for me, a life very different than his. That is, one of the most valuable things he said to be before he passed away coming back home from a late night at work when I was ten years old.
I never imagined I would be here were I am now. Getting a great education at a university. Migrant education is important and very close to my heart because I myself am a migrant student and someone saw potential in me and put aside my social status, the fact I have a one parent, hispanic, a woman, and believed I was someone special. It only takes one person. I want to encourage other migrant students, who move from school to school, losing credits, being influenced by family members to go straight to work after High School, that there is a different path. This life, the one I am fortunatly and blessed to be living is possible. I will be working with migrant childern and teaching english to their parents and other migrant adults this summer. Along with visiting their homes and awaring these parents and childern to not give up on education. Education is the greatest asset a person can obtain in this life.
Working with SAF will be a great opportunity for me. I will be able to help families that represent my own sister, mother, and father. It is very exciting and it will be an amazing experiance to have and be able to bring back knowledge to my campus and community! I will learn more about problems with farmers rights, education, and other issues that affect these migrant families and be able to take action.
You can take action too!
Donate to SAF and help me reach my goal of $650.00 that will go towards this great cause!
