Picture of Birthday Gift

Update: Please let me know if your donation doesn't show up below; there have been some glitches. Along with the folks below, thanks to Mom and Dad, Dawn&Tom, Joe&Carlisle, Jean&Chuck and Dawn&Chris for their donations by check to my campaign!

Welcome to my virtual birthday party!

This year SAF turns 20 and I turn 40.

In honor of this, I'm raising my goal to $1500, sponsoring the End of Summer celebration, and raising my monthly gift to SAF.

Farmworkers’ average annual income is $11,000, making them the lowest paid workforce in the nation.

Since 1992, SAF has brought students and farmworkers together to learn about each other's lives, share resources and skilles improve conditions for farmworkers, and build diverse coalitions working for social change. It has been a great honor to work with SAF as a board member for the past six years and I hope this year will be my most successful fundraising effort yet.

PARTY GIFTS:

  • Donate $6 in honor of the six years I've been on SAF's board.
  • Donate $20 in honor of SAF's 20th Anniversary of growing farmworker activists.
  • Donate $40  to Student Action With Farmworkers in honor of my 40th birthday.
  • Donate any amount in honor of  (Fair) Labor Day and the work of SAF's staff and its board through the years.
  • All donations, up to $5000, will be matched  by the Fund for Democratic Communities.
  • All donors to my campaign will receive a special-edition Cris notecard and will be entered into a drawing to receive a Cris gift.

PARTY GAMES:

As noted, when you donate to my campaignyou are entered into a drawing for a gift of your choice from my limited list of abilities (homemade dog cookies, notecards featuring my photography, flyfishing lesson, home-cooked dinner, simple tax return). Really, your choice (within reason). Also, all donors are invited to our physical physical house party on September 1 from 4-9pm, 4001 Inwood Drive 27705.

(If you need a game to tide you over,  you can click the icon below.)

PARTY EATS:

85% percent of the fresh fruits and vegetables we eat are hand-picked by farmworkers. As consumers, we can support farmworkers when we:

  • Don't waste food.
  • Purchase locally-grown, pesticide-free, and sustainably-produced fruits and vegetables that honor just labor practices.
  • Support local food cooperatives, farmer's markets, and organic growers' associations that honor just labor practices.
  • Participate in local awareness-raising actions. MORE:

Screening:

If you were to attend a live SAF house party, you might be treated to a screening of our incredible documentary, made in collaboration with Minnow Media and the Farmworker Advocacy Network, on the 50th anniversary of Edward R. Murrow's "Harvest of Shame" documentary.  If you have the time, please watch:

HARVEST of DIGNITY with Spanish Subtitles from Minnow Media on Vimeo.

Thanks for coming to my virtual birthday!  I am grateful for the opportunity to continue to share this work with you.

Please give what you can, since it will be matched through August 31st.

Cheers,

PS THANKS to everyone who has already donated to SAF (here and otherwise). We are so happy to have your consistent support.

ABOUT 2011-2012 Grassroots Fundraising Campaign

1992-2012 | For twenty years SAF has worked to bring together students, community members, and farmworkers in the Southeast to work for justice in the agricultural system.

SAF is celebrating our 20-year history by honoring our achievements while recognizing that as the current political climate reveals, there is much work left to be done. SAF is focused on our vision, where one day all farmworkers will have dignity in their work and livelihood.  This past November Student Action with Farmworkers (SAF) launched a year of activities and events in honor of our 20-year anniversary as an organization.

As a part of our grassroots fundraising efforts this year, we are asking 25 individuals or groups to help us reach the goal of raising $6,250 by having gatherings to celebrate and honor SAF's work and give their contacts an opportunity to contribute to SAF's future.

Donate Now!

Be sure to write in the name of the fundraiser in the notes section so your contribution will go towards their fundraising goal!

It's not too late to sign up as a party planner to help celebrate SAF's 20 years! Contact Nadeen to find out more!
