Dear Friends,

You can support Student Action with Farmworkers right now by making a tax-deductible donation here. But first let me tell you about how I came to know and support SAF.

Six years ago Gus and I arrived in Durham, North Carolina, where I started my position as Human Rights Archivist at Duke University Libraries.  One of the first social justice organizations I began working with was Student Action with Farmworkers and though over the years I've had the chance to work with activists from all around the world, SAF is one my personal favorites.  As their archivist I've become intimately familiar with the work SAF does to support farmworkers and grow student activists, and how SAF as an organization continues to grow, change, and adapt.  As an Argentine immigrant from a working class family with a strong tradition of labor activism, SAF's work with immigrant workers and labor rights strikes a personal cord that resonates with my family's history.

Few organizations are as efficient and effective as SAF.  85% of SAF's budget goes directly to programs that have a direct impact on farmworkers.  And farmworkers have a direct impact on me!  Through SAF I've learned that 85% of the fruits and vegetables I eat are hand-picked by farmworkers, and yet this labor force of 2-3 million workers averages an annual income of only $11,000.

I was very honored then to be invited to join SAF's Board of Directors this September and look forward to helping them continue their important work to advocate for farmworkers and to grow a new generation of activists and community leaders.  Gus and I are giving $250 to start the campaign, so please help me support SAF by making a donation today!

Thank you!

ABOUT 2012-2013 Farmworker Awareness Campaign

SAF's grassroots fundraising goal is to raise $20,000 through online fundraising and house parties!

SAF uses money raised from individuals to:

  • conduct outreach to students and farmworkers,
  • provide training, stipends, and scholarships for our interns, students organizers, and youth,
  • share documentaries and presentations with the general public, and
  • provide a living wage and full benefits to our staff

Thanks to those that have already donated this year through our 20-year anniversary sponsorships. We hope that you will consider giving again to help sustain our work for the next 20 years.
