Dear Friends,
Over the past year we've had the opportunity to meet and learn about some of the amazing interns and students, many of whom come from farmworker communities, whose lives are changed by SAF, and from whom SAF gains its incredible spirit and vibrancy. You can read about their experiences on the SAF intern blog: http://saf-unite.tumblr.com/ . By donating to SAF you are helping these young people become today and tomorrow's advocates for farmworkers, food justice, and social change.
Few organizations are as efficient and effective as SAF. 85% of SAF's budget goes directly to programs that have a direct impact on farmworkers. And farmworkers have a direct impact on us! Through SAF we've learned that 85% of the fruits and vegetables we eat are hand-picked by farmworkers, and yet this labor force of 2-3 million workers averages an annual income of only $11,000. Farmwork is also one of the least regulated and hence most dangerous occupations in this country. Did you know the law allows children as young as 12 to work on farms, and that the law does not provide over-time pay for most farmworkers?
Gus and I look forward to helping SAF continue their important work to advocate for farmworkers and to grow a new generation of activists and community leaders. We are giving $100 to start the campaign, so please help us support SAF by making a donation today!
Thank you!
Patrick and Gus
