As an Intern in 2011 I learned the many injustices that farmworkers face nationally.  I was a farmworker back in Idaho but when I realized that I could do more to better our situation I took the next step. After this next anecdote I am going to talk to you about I knew that I had to be "on the other side" and help farmworkers by protecting their legal rights.

One day, when my family and I were weeding a sugarbeet field for a grower back in southern Idaho the grower showed up in his big diesel truck.  He came up to us with a straight face and told us to leave, that he was not going to pay us. We all got mad because he had made us weed that field twice already and wanted us to do it again.  I was the interpreter for the family so I went ahead and told my dad what the grower was telling us.  My dad only continued on to tell me to ask him 'to please pay us and we would leave", almost begging.  I got enough courage to say what I told him next wich was not exactly what he said.  "My dad said that if you do not pay us we will take you to court' I said.  His smile turned into a frown and got very angry and called us many different bad stereotypes but he then said "follow me to my house so I can write you a check".  This is when I realized that we can change our situation.  I realized that we had the power to demand for our rights to be protected. This is when I found this internship opportunity in North Carolina.

I was an intern with Student Action With Farmworkers back in 2011 and after graduating I am now working in the placement they assigned me at, in the legal arena like I always dreamed of.  Every year there are at least two students selected, to participate in the internship, from Idaho.  But not only from Idaho, from all over the nation.  Together we can better the barriers that farmworkers face.  Let it be Health, Legal Aid, Migrant Education, and Community organizing, SAF is there making a difference!  Now as a Board Member myself I ask you to please contribute to our campaign and help me reach my goal of $1,000 during this week to continue with the fight!

SAF uses money raised from individuals to:

• conduct outreach to students and farmworkers,
• provide training, stipends, and scholarships for our interns, students organizers, and youth,
• share documentaries and presentations with the general public, and
• provide a living wage and full benefits to our staff
