SAQA Monthly Update - January 2016
Dear Jennifer,
Happy New Year!
This is a long message, but so many exciting things are happening in SAQA that I hope you’ll read through it all.
Board and Staff Changes
Four new members will be joining the Board at the conference in Philadelphia. We are delighted to welcome Deborah Boschert, Jayne Gaskins, Jeanne Marklin, and Chris Nielsen! In addition, Marvin Fletcher is taking over the position of Treasurer. Also at the conference, Kris Sazaki and Judith Trager will be stepping down after six years of service. Lisa Ellis will become the new President of the Board.
I am especially pleased to announce that we will now have an Assistant Executive Director – Jennifer Solon will be expanding her duties beyond managing our website and our bookkeeping to now also help manage the organization.
I will miss Cheryl Ferrin as Marketing Director – we’ve been working together for 12 years! However, I am looking forward to working more closely with Cynthia Wenslow and Diane Howell as they work to manage the digital and print aspects of SAQA’s marketing.
Desi Vaughn will be increasing her hours as our regions continue to grow and become more active. And Bill and Allison Reker will be managing the logistics for the 2016 Benefit Auction.
More Museum Venues!
We’ve been negotiating with two more museums which are interested in displaying SAQA exhibitions. The Grace Hudson Museum in Ukiah, California, will be hosting “Wild Fabrications,” and a museum in Missouri is interested in hosting both “Wild Fabrications” and “Food for Thought.”
Wonderful news about SAQA’s 2015 Appeal
I am thrilled to be able to tell you that thanks to the generosity of our Board and our members, we raised more than $43,000 to support SAQA’s exhibitions and programs in 2016. Thank you so much to everyone who donated! None of SAQA’s success would be possible without your support. (Note:December Donors are listed near the bottom of this email).
In the appeal letter, I asked you to think about where you want to be in three years. I wanted to share a few of the wonderful responses that I received:
Frieda Anderson from Elgin, Illinois: “I would love to be standing in front of my quilt in a museum.”
Ilse Anysas-Salkauskas from Cochrane, Alberta, Canada: “As a senior professional artist, I will hopefully be healthy enough to continue to create and show my art work as far and as wide as I have been since graduating from the Alberta College of Art and Design.”
Carol Hancuh from Eagan, Minnesota: “I want to finish organizing my sewing room. I want to make at least 5 more pieces with portraits and social justice themes. I’d like a show of my work.”
Gloria Klutzke from Lafayette, Indiana: “Entering a quilt in a major exhibition? That would be great!
Standing in front of your quilt in a gallery? I would love that.
Teaching a class? Not sure about that.
Sharing you art quilts with museum visitors? Absolutely!
Or simply moving your inner creativity to the next level? Always looking for inspiration!!”
Yemima Lavan from Modin, Israel: “Three years from now I want to enter my quilts in museum and gallery exhibitions. I hope it will come true.”
I’d love to hear from you about your dreams for your art quilt career!

New Online Gallery - Sunlight and Shadow
Kathleen McCabe - Funeral in the Rain
Sarah Entsminger is our guest curator for this month's online gallery - Sunlight and Shadow. She comments:
"Skillful use of sunlight and shadow defines the shapes or forms needed to create a pleasing composition. Direction, intensity, value and color of light or shadow all play a role in illustrating the story. Sunlight and shadow also call to memories or emotions in our mind’s eye that are reflected in our understanding of the image being viewed.
The pieces of work in this gallery all use sunlight and shadow to shape our appreciation and understanding. These images make me want to linger a little longer with each piece and imagine the story being illustrated. I hope you enjoy spending time in the sunlight and shadow as you view each image in this gallery."
Selected Artists:
Melani Brewer, Lenore Crawford, Pat Durbin, Betty Hahn, Tracey Lawko, Ellen Lindner, Kathleen McCabe, Barbara Barrick McKie, Elisabeth Nacenta de la Croix, Elaine Quehl, Melody Randol, Joan Sowada, Laurie Swim, Grietje Van der Veen, Charlotte Ziebarth
