SAQA Monthly Update - November 2015
Dear Jennifer, I am just back from Houston. Thanks to everyone who participated in making Market and Festival such great experience, especially our wonderful Texas co-reps who organized the SAQA booth and kept things running smoothly: Deborah Bright, Kim Buchmann, and Teresa Wong. We received so many compliments about our new exhibitions Wild Fabrications and Balancing Act. In fact, eight of the quilts were purchased! We also sold 50+ auction quilts which will help support our exhibition programs. We also welcomed a bunch of new members and sold a ton of catalogs. Despite heavy rains on Saturday, it was a fantastic Festival experience! Issue 2 of Art Quilt Collector has just arrived from the printer. The cover story is a very moving report on Michael James’ exhibition of his latest body of work inspired by his wife’s battle with Alzheimer’s. Collection advice has to do with the importance of photography for your collection, and Jack Walsh talks at length about his new storage system. The “Artists to Watch” theme is Cityscapes, and the Gallery features landscape art. Subscribers should start receiving their issues in the next couple of weeks. Finally, I hope everyone is busy working on their entry for My Corner of the World. We had a such a tremendous response to both Concrete and Grassland and Stories of Migration calls for entry. I love to see so much creative energy from our members!

Did you know? The Barnes Foundation boasts the greatest private collection of post-impressionist and early-modern art. Their collection includes more than 3,000 masterpieces, including 181 Renoirs, 69 Cézannes, 59 Matisses, 46 Picassos, 16 Modiglianis, and 7 Van Goghs, plus textiles, metalwork, decorative objects, African sculpture, Native American ceramics and jewelry, and Pennsylvania German furniture.

Susan Else - Chasing a Dream Melinda Rushing is our guest curator for this month's online gallery - Dancing to a Different Drummer . She comments: "Motion is a key concept in design. By combining elements that make the eye move over the work, an artist can convey motion. I find that if a quilt has motion, it holds my attention. Call for Entry: My Corner of the World
Deadline: November 30 My Corner of the World invites you, the artist, to examine your world - the world, real or imagined, that represents what is important in your life. It might be where you reside, work, or grew up. It might be a favorite place from any point in your life or the special space you take yourself to internally. Where do you feel most yourself? What place makes you feel most grounded, inspired or at peace? My Corner of the World asks you to look at the big picture including, but not limited to your homeland, ancestry or culture. Premiering at the Stratford Perth Museum in Ontario, Canada in May 2016

Exhibition News
Earth Stories celebrates the stories of people or projects that enhance the planet, make a significant difference in restoring and/or protecting the environment, increase sustainability and otherwise improve the earth we all occupy. This exhibition was jurored by Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi, SAQA's keynote speaker for the 2016 SAQA Conference. Dr. Mazloomi is an artist, author, historian, and curator and is acknowledged as one of the most influential African American quilt historians in the United States. Earth Stories will be on display at the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles in California from November 6 through February 28.

The Dairy Barn Arts Center is seeking a full-time Quilt National and Exhibition Director to oversee planning and production of all exhibitions at the Dairy Barn Arts Center. More Details » Sandra Sider is doing research for an article concerning museum exhibitions of contemporary quilt art since 2005.
