Description

Treks for Tots Summer Vacation Camp 2015

For Ages 31/2-5

June 22-August 28, 2015

9am-3pm or 9am-12pm

Through this introductory camp experience, children gain self confidence, social skills and a greater awareness of the world around them. We create a safe learning experience that builds upon a young child's natural curiosity and inspires a life-long stewardship ethic. With a camper to counselor ratio of 4:1, children are assured a safe and rewarding experience that matches their learning styles and developmental stages.

Every session begins with a getting-to-know you activity, followed by an introduction of the days schedule and lessons. Then Trekkers head outside for exploration and discovery. After lunch, quieter activities will include walks, crafts and stories.

Sessions run 5 days a week from 9am-3 pm or children can enroll in a half day option from 9am-12pm.
Full Weekly Cost: $275 members, $300 non-members
Half Day Weekly Cost: $175 members, $200 non-members

Your family membership must be valid through June 2015 to receive the member rate.

Weekly Themes

SESSION 1  June 22-26  The Intertidal Zone
Put on your water shoes and step carefully into the Intertidal Zone. You’ll be amazed by the life forms we find on the rocky shore! Creatures with suction cups, stalked eyes and slimy tentacles… But, don’t be afraid, they only eat each other!

SESSION 2  June 29-July 3  Ocean Potions
Scientists design and conduct experiments to better understand the world around them. We’ll spend the week conducting our own wild and watery experiments to get to the bottom of some of the ocean’s mysteries.

SESSION 3  July 6-10  Creatures of Our Coasts
How is the east coast of the U.S. similar to the west coast? How is it different? We’ll spend plenty of time exploring our own tide pools, and then investigate whether there are similar creatures and seaweeds across the country, as well as on other coasts around the world.

SESSION 4  July 13-17  Eco-Mania!
What can you do to help our planet and its ocean stay healthy? Come find out! We’ll get hands-on with ‘green’ projects, such as constructing solar ovens, making recycled paper, and other fun projects. Campers will work on ‘eco-skits’ with their group and at the end of the week we’ll put on a show, parents and friends invited!

SESSION 5  July 20-24  All Along the Rocky Shore
“There must be some way out of here, said the hermit crab to its shell....” The tide is low and it is time to get out into the tide pools to see what we can find. We’ll search for crabs, sea stars, nudibranchs and other creatures. Discover some amazing adaptations, from camouflage to stinging tentacles, and find out how a hermit crab gets relief when its living quarters are cramped.

SESSION 6  July 27-31  Work on and Under the Sea
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work on a lobster boat or a nuclear submarine? Come find out! Special guests will visit during the week and give us the opportunity to get hands-on with all sorts of cool gear, such as SCUBA gear, fishing tackle, radar and sonar equipment and more. We’ll even construct some gear ourselves!

SESSION 7  August 3-7  Oceans Alive!
Dive into a week of fun learning about marine creatures. From the largest creature on earth, the blue whale, to microscopic plankton, we’ll investigate the incredible diversity of the world’s ocean and learn how climate change is effecting creatures of the sea.

SESSION 8  August 10-14  Art in Nature
The natural world is filled with wonderful patterns, shapes, colors and designs. We’ll explore and uncover some of nature’s artwork. We’ll also create some amazing art ourselves, and be visited by guest artists who will teach us their craft. Each day take home a masterpiece, inspired by nature!

SESSION 9  August 17-21  Coastal Connections
We’ll trek through time to learn about our connections to the coast! Discover how Native Americans and early settlers used the land around the seacoast. We’ll explore the Park for possible sources of food and shelter used long ago. We’ll hear tales of sailors and PIRATES and investigate Odiorne’s WWI history and fortifications.

SESSION 10  August 24-28  Best of Summer 2015
Our counselors will choose from our campers’ favorite topics and activities from the summer for this week. Topics/activities may include exploring the tide pools, conducting science experiments, listening to pirate tales, and more! Come celebrate summer’s end with fun, games and activities. This is a session you don’t want to miss!
