Ever wonder how our local island communities have enough water and power? Tonight you’ll find out from the two men responsible for transforming the way the campuses of the Shoals Marine Laboratory and Oceanic Hotel keep the lights on, and the kitchen and water running (with fresh, grey and salt water). Ross Hansen, Director of Facilities and Planning at the lab, and Jack Farrell, Star Island Director of Facilities will give you an behind-the-scenes look at some of the challenges they have to solve, from desalinating seawater, to shifting away from oil and using composting toilets. Both bring decades of experience and humorous anecdotes to their presentations. You think you have problems making your home more sustainable—try it nine miles off shore for hundreds of people in century-old buildings!

Tickets for the Greening the Shoals dinner are $50 for Seacoast Science Center members; $60 for non-members and include a cocktail reception, catered dinner, and presentation.
