Summary

"Children "on the outside" with a parent in prison face numerous challenges. Too often they grow up under a cloud of low expectations and live with the stigma and shame that come with this loss. Too often society dismisses these children as future liabilities while overlooking opportunities to address the pain and trauma with which these children struggle. However, it is by facing the trauma and stigma of parental incarceration head on that we can assist these children as they grow into our future parents and community leaders. During this session, current research on the topic will be discussed along with recommended interventions. Additionally, children who have lived the experience will be available to share their stories.
