Madera Canyon in the Santa Rita Mountains is one of the most famous birding areas in southeast Arizona. The diverse habitats of riparian woodland bordered by desert grasslands, oak woodlands, and mountain forests is home to a wide spectrum of birds. We’ll start in the mesquite-dotted grasslands of Florida Wash to look for sparrows and other desert birds. At Proctor Road we’ll listen for Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet, Bell’s Vireo, Blue Grosbeak, and other riparian-associated species. We’ll then continue up the canyon into the oaks and coniferous forests and include a stop at the feeders at Santa Rita Lodge. Arizona Woodpecker, Painted Redstart, Yellow-eyed Junco, Olive Warbler, and of course, Elegant Trogon. After we’ve exhausted the possibilities in Madera, we’ll move one drainage over to Florida Canyon to try for Rufous-capped Warbler and any other species we’re still hoping to add to our list! We’ll aim for 75+ species.

Join Luke Safford of Tucson Audubon and the Sweetwater Junkies team for a Big Day
Wednesday, April 17th, 6 am - 11:30 am
Come bird our favorite urban hotspot, Sweetwater Wetlands, where we can expect to find 60+ species in one morning. We'll start earlier than the usual Wednesday morning bird walk and meet at the wetlands parking area at 6am, and then we'll bird the wetlands and adjoining river path until 11:30am. Migration will be in full gear and we should find some lingering wintering birds as well. Birders of all experience levels welcome. If you are a regular Sweetwater field trip attender this is a great opportunity to break free from the big crowd of participants as well as raise some money for a worthy cause. Saturday, April 20th
Area to be covered: Tubac south. Some of the most iconic birding spots of southeast Arizona are along the I-19 corridor and we will visit areas such as Amado Pond, Montosa Canyton, Anza Trail along the Santa Cruz River and Kino Springs. We will also bird is some lesser known gems such as Walker Canyon in the Atascosa Mountains and Pesquiera Pit.

Friday, April 26th
The Agua Caliente Birdbrains help out with the weekly Thursday morning bird walk at Agua Caliente Park and run the Nature Shop at the park. This Birdathon team will start the morning with a guided walk around Agua Caliente Park, head to the Tanque Verde Wash at Wentworth to bird the wash, go up to Molino Basin and possibly higher up Catalina Highway, and return to Agua Caliente Park.

Join Scott Olmstead of Tropical Birding and the Scott's Orioles team for a Big Day
Saturday, April 27th
We'll bird the Santa Catalina Mountains from bottom to top over the course of one long day, and aim to see a selection of the representative bird species found in each life zone as we go. We'll start at dawn with riparian habitat in the Tanque Verde vicinity and then bird the Sonoran Desert at the foot of the mountains before continuing upward through the oak, pine, and fir forests toward the top of the mountains. Our target is to see and/or hear 100-120 species. If we are lucky we may even see our namesake bird! An optional pre-dawn owling excursion will be added this year.
