Welcome, , to Tucson Audubon's weekly update.

Jim Burns' photo of a Painted Bunting reminds us that when it comes to birds, just about anything can show up just about anywhere. Many of you have not seen Painted Buntings in southeast Arizona, but a few do come here. They are seen mostly in August and September, during the period when they disperse from their breeding areas but before going south for the winter.

As you disperse from your summer haunts, don't forget to keep birding. Enjoy the regular birds in our midst and be open to the bird that surprises!

Enjoy this weekly update and, as always, contact us with your questions.

Living With Nature Monthly Program Kicks Off New Season

SAVE THE DATE | Monday, September 12, 2016 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM

Tucson Audubon Society invites you to join us for the launch of our 2016-2017 Living With Nature Monthly Program in Tucson, a free series for the public designed to entertain, inform, and educate.

Join us for WORDS ON WATER: A Literary Celebration of the San Pedro with esteemed authors Alison Hawthorne Deming, Richard Shelton, and Ken Lamberton who will all be introduced by their friend and colleague, Robert Houston. This will take place at Pima Community College's downtown campus. A campus map is available here, and is important to reference as Speedway Blvd is under construction.

Listen to them read excerpts from their own writings that relate to the San Pedro and our beautiful surroundings. Afterwards please join us for light refreshments while the authors will sign their books.

Although this event is free we would appreciate an RSVP.

A Lifeline for At-Risk Birds - Take Action!

For dozens of declining species, from the Cerulean Warbler (image by Frode Jacobsen) to the Short-eared Owl, time is running out. A major boost in resources is needed to help protect birds and other wildlife in all corners of the country. Now, a new bill could provide a lifeline for these birds and thousands of other species of wildlife. The Recovering America's Wildlife Act would dedicate more than $1 billion each year to help those with the greatest conservation need.

We need all of the resources that can be marshaled to protect birds from further habitat loss, climate change, and other threats, and a major investment in conservation funding would set the stage for a brighter future for birds, and for all of us.

Please ask your U.S. Representative to support the Recovering America's Wildlife Act using National Audubon's alert page. You can send a sample letter, or edit it with your own words for even greater impact (many members of Congress have special software so they can easily see personalized emails).

OPTICS

Nikon Monarch 7 8X42
This is the top of the line of the Entry Level binoculars we carry in the Nature Shop, one that will satisfy any beginning and most experienced birders for a long time.  What we like about it: the widest field of view--making it much easier to find the bird. Great ergonomics--it really feels comfortable and light in the hand. And HD glass in an affordable binocular--you’ll notice the difference in how bright the colors seem, even when looking at warblers skulking in the shadows up on Incinerator Ridge. When one of our customers walks out of the shop with this model, we really feel good for them; we know that it’s going to improve their experiencing of the birds here and anywhere else during their travels.
Retail 479.95 Member Price $431.95

Both available in our Nature Shop. Stop by today!
