Welcome, Jo, to Tucson Audubon's weekly update.
The holiday season is a time for visiting with family and friends. At Tucson Audubon we do this at the Holiday Potluck on December 7. It's a time to see old friends--maybe those snowbirds you haven't seen since last winter--and share wonderful food. The speaker will be Scott Richardson, an expert on the Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl and the status of its population in Arizona. I'll see you there and I'll race you to the dessert table!
There's birding galore this season too, between field trips and Christmas Bird Counts. If your idea of a beautiful Christmas tree is the outside kind with a bird perched on top, get out there and bird!
The holiday sale in the Nature Shops runs through this Saturday, November 21!

us as we celebrate our members and all you do for Tucson Audubon. This
year, Scott Richardson, supervisory biologist with the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service, will be speaking on the Status of the Cactus

you RSVP, please indicate whether you will be bringing a salad,
appetizer, main dish (vegan, vegetarian, or meat), dessert, or punch. To
reduce the waste produced by events like this, we ask you bring your
own plate, cup and utensils, though paper plates will be available if you
forget.
This is sure to be a wonderful event and we look forward to seeing you there!
Volunteer at the Holiday Potluck
We need a few volunteers to help make this a festive, informative and
delicious event! This a fun way to start the holiday season. Make sure
you register online and indicate what type of dish you will be bringing.
Chirstmas Bird Count Tips & Techniques
Free Workshop | Saturday, December 5
Location: Tucson Audubon Mason Center at 3835 W Hardy Rd, Tucson, AZ 85742 MAP
This free workshop is for those who are about to do their first CBC and want some information before going out as well as those who have participated in this holiday season birding tradition for years and want to level up their game. It will provide participants with numerous techniques, tips and suggestions to help make your next CBC (and general birding) experience the best it can be. Adding even a few of these to your annual CBC outing will enhance your team’s outcome with an increase in both species and numbers—making the count more accurate, more useful, and hopefully more fun!
The workshop is 3-4 hours long and will begin at 8:00 a.m. with an hour or less classroom-based PowerPoint presentation and then we will hit the field. Once in the field the presenter will go into more detail and provide first-hand experiences that will assist you in finding, “attracting,” and counting more birds. Please be sure to bring: Layered clothing, comfortable shoes, paper and pen for taking notes, plus drinks and snacks as needed.

Volunteer Opportunities with Tucson Audubon
Paton Center Casita Steward
Tucson Audubon's Paton Center for Hummingbirds is seeking a Casita Steward who would be able to come in twice a month to clean the casita, take inventory on brochures, and report to Tucson Audubon on any supplies that need replenishing. Of course, we also encourage the Casita steward to enjoy the birds around the property whenever you stop by!

Do you love hiking and working with kids?
Tucson Audubon's Trekking Rattlers program is looking for YOU to help us co-lead educational hikes for middle school students in some wonderful places in Southeast Arizona. The Trekking Rattlers program has presented hundreds of students with opportunities to discover the unique habitat we live in. Students have hiked Arizona trails, learned how to use binoculars, and contributed to service learning projects. They have found new friendships, learned to work as a team, and discovered what it takes to be in harmony with nature. For many students, these outdoor experiences are firsts!
