Nest Box Assembly Parties

                        & Pilot Program Visioning Discussions

If one of your 2014 New Year’s resolutions involves rolling up your shirtsleeves and getting to work in support of local birds, then you’re in luck!  The first nest box assembly parties for Tucson Audubon’s nest box pilot program are just around the corner.  Our team of volunteer carpenters will have already pre-cut the lumber for American Kestrel nest boxes.  Everyone at the gathering can help assemble the boxes.  We’ll also be envisioning ways to best explore the use of nest boxes as a citizen conservation tool in Tucson.

Sign up for one or more of the following dates by e-mailing: kashley@tucsonaudubon.org

  • Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014 – Historic Y Courtyard – 4:00 to 6:00pm
  • Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014 – Mason Center - 9:30 to 11:30
  • Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014 – Historic y Courtyard – 10:00 to noon

If you have an electric drill (+ bits and drivers) you could bring along, that would be helpful.   We’ll also have several drills and other tools available.

TAS Nest Boxes for Urban Birds is looking for volunteers to act on behalf of local avian species in a number of important ways. You can help build, assemble, host, and monitor boxes, research cavity-nesting birds and nest box designs, and help us investigate heat mitigation techniques, nest monitoring protocols, and more.  To learn more about the project, follow this link: tucsonaudubon.org/nestbox.

Many Thanks to Volunteer Carpenters

Will DeBoer and Joe DeRouen ...

... for kickstarting our project by donating time, energy, and wood-working expertise.  If you have a home carpentry shop and a love of birds, consider joining our carpentry team.  We'll have lots of lumber that needs careful cutting in the first few months of 2014.  (Pictured is Joe Derouen warming up one of his table saws.)

Got Kestrels?

In the few weeks since we began talking with Tucsonans about our Kestrel boxes, several folks have shared with us their recent American Kestrel sightings.  Have you got Kestrels in your neighborhood?  In addition to building and mounting boxes, we would like to start gathering data on where Tucson's kestrels are spending time this winter.  We will be especially interested to know about holes where Kestrels may be roosting for the winter, the formation of potential breeding pairs, and any evidence in early spring of Kestrels nesting.  If you'd be interested in doing some avian detective work, keeping tabs on your local Kestrels, and letting us know from time to time what you're seeing, that might help us gain better insight into the dynamics of our local population.

Send your observations with the tagline "Kestrel Watch" to: kashley@tucsonaudubon.org
