Dear Jo,

Learn about birds, birding, using your field guide, creating backyard habitat,  and also about bats from world experts at one of the workshops at the Tucson Bird & Wildlife Festival August 1317. You do need to register, and details are below.

Our nature shops have items of monsoon interest, including ways to measure the rain that falls on your home, and resources on how to catch that rain and use it on your property.

We can offer you free field trips, and a new home for your unwanted miter saw, and iPad. See below.

Meanwhile, can I count on you to be part of Tucson Audubon's $25,000 summer campaign to create oases for birds in Tucson. It's easy of course, just click here!

In three days, a migrating Wilson's Warbler can increase its weight by ten percent eating insects from just one native mesquite tree

Your special summer gift will help people learn how to create bird-friendly oases in their yards and bring more native trees, shrubs, and birds, into our community. Read our full letter and also get your Fast Wilson's Warbler facts.

Thank you for sharing your love of birds, birding, and the places they live through Tucson Audubon.

Relaxed Feeder Birding on New Field Trip

August 13Wednesday 6:45 AM
Feeder-Bird Watching at WOWAZ in Catalina
If you're not up for a birding hike, this outing is for you. 'Wild Outdoor World of Arizona' (WOWAZ) is a 3-acre haven for birds and butterflies west of the Canada del Oro Wash in Catalina. The owners have spent more than a decade converting a dusty parking area into a native plant garden with pathways, trees, water features and bird feeders. This oasis adjacent to the CDO Wash draws some remarkable birds, with over 140 species documented to date. A short walk along the paths will be offered, but participants can choose to bird solely from chairs on a comfortable, shaded patio surrounded by hummingbird and other feeders. Ideal for anyone with mobility issues, as well as seniors, beginners and anyone interested in seeing a lot of birds with little effort. The $10 entry fee will be waived for this trip, although contributions for bird food will be appreciated by the owners. Limited to 14 participants. We will carpool from the SaddleBrooke drug store parking lot at 6:45 AM and return there by 9:30 AM.  You must register online.

Hike, Learn, Eat | Seven Saturdays in Patagonia

Starting this fall—one Saturday per month, October through April—Tucson Audubon’s Paton Center for Hummingbirds will offer three separate activities in Patagonia.  You are invited to attend one, two, or all three:

  1. HIKE: The day’s events will begin early with a guided Bird and Biodiversity Hike. Allow Bryon Lichtenhan to introduce you, month-by-month, to hidden corners of the species-rich country surrounding the Paton Center.  From the Patagonia Mountains (one of Arizona’s newest IBAs!) to the San Rafael Grasslands.
  2. LEARN: Following the morning hike our Relaxed Lecture Series will provide informal discussions on a variety of topics regarding the natural history, ecology, and conservation actions of southeast Arizona. In October look forward to learning about the local sub-species, including the Azure Bluebird (see image above, courtesy Lois Manowitz).
  3. EAT: Join fellow birders, biodiversity enthusiasts, and armchair conservationists for a Picnic in Patagonia.  Support the local economy and help maintain Patagonia as a thriving hub for eco-tourism by purchasing your lunch in town.

Would you like to become a dedicated sponsor of the Paton Center programming?  Do you have other questions, suggestions?  We could use your help!

Please contact the Paton Center, Coordinator Keith to learn more about ways to be involved:  kashley@tucsonaudubon.org

Many Ways to Support Tucson Audubon

Wish List
Help support the Nature Shops, Paton Center, and the Restoration Crew
in upcoming projects! We need the following tools in an effort to create interactive, informative, and stunning displays in the shop, as well as to build necessary components for our species-specific restoration and guest-friendly construction projects. We need:

  • Compound miter saw (ideally double bevel, 12", sliding)
  • Table saw (smaller probably better due to lack of storage)

The Restoration Crew also seeks one or more tablets/iPad/iPod touch/smartphone with larger format display for "in the field" data collection. In cooperation with National Audubon Society we have the capability to create a custom app for collecting and recording necessary field data in a way that ensures data integrity and cuts down on data entry time. Outcome? More restoring and less computer sitting!
